The sets have underfloor diesels with alternators supplying power to electric motors. Cars 1, 3, 4 and 6 are diesel powered while cars 2 and 5 carry all the electrical gear. Each bogie is reportedly driven on one axle only.

A NSW Trainlink CAF 6-car R set was under test last night Wednesday 12th Thursday 13th March between Denistone and Epping. The diesel loco used to haul the R Set to the possession area was 42 year old Alco 8049 owner by SSR.
