thanks everyone. Just to check, when does the morning peak end for trains leaving Kings Cross? the ticket I have been sold to Ely is listed as 'OFF-PEAK R' in the ticket type section of the ticket, so would this be OK for a FCC train leaving KGX at 09:45 on Thursday?

I'm travelling to ely the day before (and coming back from cambridge). Would I be allowed to travel from cambridge on a return ticket which actually specifies London to Ely and back? Are there ticket barriers at cambridge?
