    Avanti reservations

I've been using a 1st class ALR for the last two weeks up and down the WCML. Plenty of unreserved (or 'reserved' but unoccupied) seats in 1st on peak and off peak Pendolino services on weekdays (including to/from Euston); less so on weekends and Bank Holiday Monday due to coach K only being...

    RealTimeTrains website

Had this experience on Sunday 15th March with the 1938 Northwich to Stockport, the last connection of the day for me travelling to Kidsgrove. Checked Realtime Trains throughout the day and it was shown as running and on time, as was the inbound 1803 to Chester that formed it. When I arrived at...

Leamington Spa-Crewe not valid via Nuneaton

    Wouldn't it be permitted by the 3 mile longer than the shortest route rule ? Leamington-Birmingham-Crewe approx 24 + 54 miles =78 miles - versus Leamington-Nuneaton-Crewe approx 20 + 61 miles = 81 miles.

ORR estimates of station usage 2024/25

Thanks. That makes sense in terms of accounting for these erroneous flow discrepancies.

ORR estimates of station usage 2024/25

Another intriguing one is the Nuneaton-Stockport (two way) flow. Minimal up until 2022/23, then jumps to nearly 47k per year in 2023/24 and same again for 2024/25. Same happens with the Nuneaton-Manchester flow. Minimal up until 2022/23 then increases to over 21k in 2023/24 then to over 31k in...

Is there a case for extending some St Pancras to Nottingham services to Mansfield?

The figures were extracted from 'railwaydata.co.uk, which (I believe was created by a member on this forum?). Whichever station you select, they only give the one way passengers flows, so you have to double them to get the two way flow for each station pair. 1747814025 The passenger numbers for...

Is there a case for extending some St Pancras to Nottingham services to Mansfield?

Based on existing London flows to/from Mansfield (and Worksop), I would say a definite NO for a direct London service:- LONDON FLOWS (total both ways) 2023/24 Mansfield 14.620 Mansfield Woodhouse 3,404 Worksop 7,544 Compare these with 2023/24...

    Stone station having WMR branding

Intrigued as to why Coventry never had the Virgin or Avanti branding when far less busier and less important Avanti/Virgin managed stations do (or did)? Coventry is the busiest in terms of passenger numbers and it's London flow (1.3m in 2023/24) of all of the Avanti managed stations. It still...

First Class Off Peak Return - Kidsgrove to Arbroath

Thank you. That is very useful to know you can buy from Lumo or other TOC's and circumvent the 'pseudo compulsory reservation' by making a free reservation with them where possible.

First Class Off Peak Return - Kidsgrove to Arbroath

Iv'e travelled on the 1109 Avanti from Crewe northbound a number of times without reservations and always managed to find seats in first class, but will still try for a reservation. There's also the option of via Glasgow where there's the option of an at least hourly Avanti service. 1738610294...

First Class Off Peak Return - Kidsgrove to Arbroath

Out on 20th February, returning 25th February. Outbound from Kidsgrove 1045 change Crewe and Edinburgh. Returning from Arbroath 1050 change Edinburgh and Crewe. 1738600753 Thanks. That does make sense. Means you can still buy the off peak ticket separately and then reserve a seat via the...

First Class Off Peak Return - Kidsgrove to Arbroath

I would appreciate if someone would offer some perspective regarding difficulties searching trains times and validities via various websites for a Kidsgrove to Arbroath first class off peak return. BRfares. Com shows a fare of £216.50 (via Crewe) inclusive of 34% railcard discount. The National...

Trivia: Stations that primarily serve business parks

Bermuda Park between Nuneaton and Bedworth. Only industrial/business units, retail park, cinema and Premier Inn are nearby.

What functions cannot be performed by Ticket Vending Machines, and why?

The TVM I use at Kidsgrove gives you the option to purchase Plusbus if it's available for the destination you are travelling to, in conjunction with purchasing a ticket for that destination.

What functions cannot be performed by Ticket Vending Machines, and why?

The TVM at Kidsgrove (operated by EMR) doesn't sell rovers. It also states it sells super off peak tickets but doesn't offer the 'LNWR only' super off peak to London or other destinations en-route, only the 'LNWR only' off peak version or the much more expensive 'any operator' version, so you...
