Hi, sorry to have taken so long to get back to you! I have been living and travelling on the WCML for over 20 years. The track is a bit better that it used to be, not so many wet spots!
I did look at transferring to be a driver many years ago (under BR) but was too high a grade to transfer. Perhaps I could have pushed it a bit more, but not sure that I would have passed the eyesight test, so stuck to pushing buttons. Would prefer levers, but there ain't many of those sort of things about these days
