Ryanair (and a number of other airlines) sell tickets before they've had the slots confirmed. What can sometimes happen is that these slots move or are withdrawn, tends to affect you more if you've you've booked tickets more than 6-8mths out.

Thats a slightly different market in reality, as many people want to stop for a few days in Dubai as well rather than flying direct or are going from Glasgow or Newcastle etc. A 380 flight direct in competition with BA and Virgin from LHR to Male doesn't impact any of that.

Indeed, there are around 10 flights a week currently, Virgin and BA, all using 787 with a few 777 flights in higher season for BA. Not sure where he thought the market was for a 380.
