    Reform UK discussion

In my opinion the Conservative party is no longer a credible political entity. Their MPs will eventually defect to Reform or pack it in. That leaves their moderate voters with the choice of Reform or something representing the centre right. Labour under Starmer are not interested in a centre...

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

Yes, that chimes with my view. While Trump rambles and lurches between ideas, it acts as a smokescreen behind which the real maniacs can develop their programme.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

What was considered appropriate outer wear for both men and women. My father died in 1987, but I never saw him go out without wearing a collar and tie and, unless very hot weather, his trilby hat. My first job was at a stockbrokers in London in 1968. Collar, tie and a two piece suit were...

    2023 Israel - Hamas / Hezbollah war

I think that Netanyahu and Putin are two men who need a forever war to keep themselves from being undermined domestically.

DLR Thamesmead Extension: Preferred Route Decided

The SL3 Superloop bus provides a quick-ish connection from Abbey Wood to Bexleyheath town centre and on to Sidcup.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Out of utter ignorance, I was going to post "jumble sales", being unaware of any for years, but a quick preliminary search displayed, to my surprise, lots of events happening right now.

    And don't forget Cremola.

Why have semaphore signals & boxes mostly been replaced

To extend this discussion further into the future, how long before lineside signals are replaced by in-cab alerting, and beyond that, drivers are replaced by computers in a centralised command centre?

    Cost of modelling

Am I alone in finding the cost of most items from modelling suppliers to be very expensive, eyewatering in same cases? I understand the ramifications of Covid, Ukraine war, cost of living crisis and so on to supply lines, but even so, it's becoming pricey. Rails of Sheffield are currently...

Royal Mail to cease using trains

If it's possible, the greenest option would be to see if a local business stocks your requirement and walk there and buy it. Failing that, perhaps use a click and collect option and walk to the pickup point. Just saying...

Most exotic licence plate personally spotted on UK road

Somewhat off topic, but a 'foreign' plate that I saw a couple of years ago when visiting my son in South Carolina that amused me was a New York plate - MMM PIE. Evidently a fan of the Simpsons.

Which lines should be next for European Train Control System ?

When the signalling of sections of track is upgraded, is any passive provision made for ETCS, or is that actually feasible?

Where else in the UK could tramways/light rail be installed?

Wouldn't more dedicated bus lanes and more electric buses be a cheaper and more flexible option?

Trivia - disused passenger stations that are still used for rail purposes?

Spa Road, the remains of which are used as an access point to the live railway.

Rail connections should cater for early airline flights

TFL run the night bus service through the early hours, every 30 minutes or so. If you can get to Liverpool Street or Stratford, then Stansted isn't too difficult. Not ideal if you have bulky luggage, but it's cheaper than a taxi or an overnight hotel.
