If you don’t want to pay, try and checkin exactly 24 hours beforehand and you will be able to change your seat to an empty seat free of charge. If the seat you want is not available, do not check the box to collect your boarding pass, and you can keep going back to check if more seats have...

All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

I believe XC’s control is based at their HQ in Cannon House which is just a serviced office building shared with other (non-railway) companies. I would therefore be surprised if it had the resilience that one would expect from a more conventional control centre [notwithstanding the fact there...

    Roads melting in hot weather

Because of a closure of the A1, l was on some minor roads near Grantham back in June at the end of the first heatwave this year and experienced this, with pieces of tarmac sticking to tyres and then falling off. The road was in a real bad state.

    Driver > guard communication

I had this on a Silverlink Class 321 about 20 years ago. All the customers on the train (at least in my carriage) could hear both ends of the conversation so it’s not like one of the staff members pressed the button to use the PA instead of the cab-to-cab.

Bridge Strike between Fenchurch Street and West Ham High Level No C2C on all lines. (24/07/26)

It will all come down to each company’s rules and procedures and the risk and robustness of their assets, and this would differ by infrastructure manager (so Network Rail or LUL) as opposed to train operating company. In the case of NR, they have assessed each bridge’s robustness is assessed...

    Supermarkets discussion

Had a really weird experience in Sainsbury’s this afternoon. Picked up a coleslaw and scanned it, and noticed that the item on the Smartshop handset display wasn’t the one I’d scanned. Picked up a few more of the same product to see they all had the same barcode. I then approached a staff...

    Dangerous doors on the 1992TS

The 73 stock categorically does not have door chimes when being closed on the porter buttons, which is what is being discussed.

You won’t have done, the 73 stock doesn’t sound door chimes.

Not all stock sounds door chimes when the porter buttons are used.

"FAO train crew" message on journeycheck

I suspect that it was more likely that the relevant controls lost oversight of the location of trains, rather than a loss of ability to communicate.

Unable to get TFL journey planner route for Sunday the 12th July between Shadwell and St Pancras Intl

It’s a Sunday so trains are timetabled to start later than the usual Monday-Saturday times. As per the TfL website the first Northbound train on Sundays leaves Bank at 07:26, arriving Kings Cross at 07:34. https://content.tfl.gov.uk/fandl-nor-wtt-59.pdf

    Reform UK discussion

Would be interesting to see whether the establishment parties actually decide to stand a candidate in this byelection. Im thinking of 2008 in Haltemprice and Howden where the incumbent MP stood down in protest over the Labour government’s erosion of civil liberties, but the point he was trying...

Not quite sure when it’s a holiday but does the system not give you an option to either accept the new timings or look for an alternative flight? To be fair, it’s normally quite good when you get a cancellation on a flight only booking in my experience, although this might just be the basic IT...
