Preston Station - really poor and needs urgent improvement

When the open golf was on at Lytham in 2012, Northern operated a shuttle service on the Blackpool South line from the parcels platform at Preston. Was some kind of special working authorised or would that be easy to do today?

    Prefix PF appeal services help

Well, I don’t normally comment on these posts because I don’t believe I have the necessary expertise, but I’m very confused about this one. The attachment seems to suggest that the railway believe it is the sister who has been caught travelling, i.e. the person WITHOUT the railcard. If this is...

    RST Online - the worst!

Use it monthly and never had any issues.

    Tickets sold by Signallers

I don’t know about tickets, but there is a box in the north west where the signalman sold free range eggs until recently. For obvious reasons I can’t name the location, but it is very scenic.

Revenue blockades at stations NOT managed by their TOC

I had occasion to work on a few of the Northern blocks at Lancaster, and the main reason for them was to catch people from Morecambe/Bare Lane on the busy morning trains.

Settle Station issues, who is responsible?

Network Rail will be responsible for the condition of the footbridge. Doubt if it will be due a repaint for several years.

    British Rail staff grades

And to add to that, I think the managerial grades went up to MS5, after which you had the EGs (Executive Grades)

    Credit /Debit Cards in Germany

I’ve had several trips this year and there are still many places that do not take cards. Restaurants in Leipzig, Berlin and Dusseldorf spring to mind, and these were all quite upmarket places in the town centre. Even the station buffet/shop at Remagen was cash only.

Station names that have an amusing Spoonerism

Many years ago we had a family holiday in Vermont and took a train from Bellows Falls. Obviously, that’s never how we recall the name.

    Platform lights on 'permanently'.

Of course there is. There could be all sorts of of electrical or systems testing or maintenance going on.

    Platform lights on 'permanently'.

Maybe they have, and maybe there’s a perfectly good reason.

    Settle Carlisle 150 anniversary

That’s interesting. How many is “quite a few” and where do the statistics come from?

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

I worked at Birmingham New Street and don’t remember any Guards getting commission. We had no ‘pay train’ turns but still took out an excess pad for ticket sales. Admittedly there were a lot more booking offices then, and even somewhere like Barnt Green had a mobile ticket seller for 2 hours...

Ticket scanning / On-board sales commission

Although that is being a little selective. If you had sold hundreds of pounds worth of tickets in 1982 your commission would have been zero as BR didn’t pay commission in those days because ticket selling and checking was just considered one if the basic roles of the Guard.

    Longest driving duty

There will be all sorts of takes from days gone by. I remember a heavy snow fall in the West Midlands one day that resulted in a couple of Euston crews sleeping in the ness room at Birmingham and travelling back the following day. They were probably on 20hrs + by the time I got back. I...
