Trivia: Journeys between two locations that can be done in opposing 'directions'?

From my beloved Dinsdale going to Northallerton ( for cheap beer at the 'Spoons) one may depart east to go via Eaglescliffe, or west to go via Darlington

    Back in the day...

@Sultan1056 I notice you mention on two occasions in July 1981 the existence of an 0930 Durham - Kings Cross. Although I am strictly from the Beazer Homes League of bashers, I can't remember Durham ever having services that started there for Kings Cross. Were they summer additionals or something?

    Back in the day...

IIRC those semi-fast services out of the Cross were tightly timed , about three hours for 188 miles with 7 stops and required hard running by Deltics or 47/4s. (Although someone who published train timings in the DPS magazine Deltic Deadline did comment at the time that it was as much about time...

    Mystery industrial-looking railway photo

In the right foreground there are what look like sleepers laid longitudinally between the rails. Might their width be a clue to the gauge?

Trivia: Slowest and fastest services on UK rail network

I thought I was in with a chance with Bishop Auckland -Darlington 11.77 miles in 27 minutes, 26.2mph. Let the service continue to destination at Saltburn and a sparkling 28mph is achieved.

    Closure of Teesside Airport station

There was an announcement recently about a new access road to facilitate industrial growth on the south side of the airfield. https://www.teessideinternational.com/news/huge-step-forward-as-plans-for-airport-business-park-unveiled/ There was also talk of moving the station a few hundred metres...

List your 3 most interesting and most boring parts of your local line

My local line is Darlington to Eaglescliffe. Going in this direction, interesting features include my house on the left(!) then later what appears to be secure accommodation for young people on the Teesside International Airport Northside Estate, followed by extensive views of the airport itself...

"There was a lot of rocking going on that night..." is this an oblique reference to the 27th Eurovision Song Contest?

    Penmanship tunnel collapse anniversary

There is a small memorial on the hillside above the collapsed tunnel. I've visited it, it is easily found, just off the A1. At the time of the line closure I was 14. I remember having a Northumbrian Ranger ticket valid to Berwick, and seeing all those for Edinburgh trudging off to the buses. My...

    Riccarton Junction amd Alston areas

My wife and I walked to Riccarton Junction from the Whitrope end having parked in the car park at the "heritage railway". Nice easy four mile round trip on good walking with artefacts to watch out for. In the deep cuttings out of the sun it can be very cold at this time of year. Don't forget the...

    longitudinal bench seats.

Of course thanks to TWPS and similar the risk has changed. Trains are less likely to be involved in heavy end-on collision and an accident is more likely to involve a derailment where the mechanism of injury is the train toppling over and passengers falling through broken windows onto the...

A Tube train can make its station call within 20 seconds at a National Rail station. Why is the dispatch procedure of some other trains so long?

Why guards check the platform before departure in the way they do is down to the well known case of Georgia Varley at James Street whose fair and considered RAIB report has been mentioned many times on this forum before...

    Stations not near their names

Is the winner in this category the (closed) station at Gatehouse? According to Sustrans it is 6 miles from Gatehouse of Fleet for which it was the station.
