Our new ticketing site is now live! Using either this or the original site (both powered by TrainSplit) helps support the running of the forum with every ticket purchase! Find out more and ask any questions/give us feedback in this thread!
The "only buy ticket when revenue officer turns up" has been a problem for years. On the other hand having a digital record of ticket purchases has surely helped the railway reclaim many more millions as it was previously very difficult with paper tickets and cash. Often these fare evaders are...
The 323s must be a increasing pain to maintain. The original manufacturer went bust so every replacement part probably costs more than the going rate and which only gets worse each year.
I will be sad to see the 323s go. They have been a workhorse of the Northern network for what feels like an...
Well at least this would rule CAF out of the new tender process based on quality and/or availability of parts. A few Sprinters are out of service at the minute too. Northern maintenance crew being kept busy.
Stadler hopefully, although they will probably have to split across two manufacturers to meet those timescales.
As much as I appreciate what the 195/331s have done to modernise and open the conversation on further new rolling stock for Northern the ride quality is awful.
I knew it was bad but...

There are loads or reasons I don't use the tap in tap out on Metrolink versus paper tickets. Your case demonstrates why and I just don't see the attraction in them.
- Busier times or stations...
An accountant at Porterbrook thought they could milk them for another 10 years or so by making then bi-mode without really understanding one does not simply strap a diesel enging onto 30 year life expired frame and components. The Northern 319s were becoming increasingly unreliable which should...
When the CAF trains were introduced in July 2019 they had a professional voiceover doing the station announcements (not sure but recognise from the Jet2 adverts). It was absolutely fine and better than the robotic ones on the 319/323 sets. Then Northern decided it was a good idea getting some...
The replacement of the Sprinter classes in long overdue so I'm pleased to hear this was not an expression of interest/pipe dream but a genuine tender/order process that will happen.
They have aged even more compared since the 195/331 introduction with nicer interiors.
My point is Chiltern have 'ticket data' for same journey but no actual evidence that short faring ocurred with these tickets (no revenue officer/MG11 form, no witness, no CCTV etc) to prove this. Without evidence the casual link of tickets would not stack up in court.
Seemed like the oldest...
+1 here Towers. Thank god I'm not the only one. I have to object to some of the "advice" on here which, however well-intentioned, is legally misguided in the extreme. The default reply on here is to "admit wrongdoing, show contrition, reach an out of court settlement" which is fine and sensible...
Depends if GTR are investigating or not. It's up to them to prove you've been short-faring over a longer period and show evidence to support this. The more you say, the more you can implicate yourself so only respond if they ask you to.
I would caution that short-faring is probably the worse...
Assuming the chassis is in good condition they could do another 20+ years if Porterbrook did a '321 Renatus' style project on them.
And good riddance to the Northern 319s. Far beyond their sell by date. Ridiculously low seats, cramped interior, malfunctioning doors and dreadful acceleration.
