BR Class 180s vs InterCity 125 vs BR Class 220/21/22 vs Class 802/810

Not an engineer nor involved in the railway, so only my opinion, but.... The decision to limit to 125 on traditional signals came after the trial of the Intercity 225s (225kph ~= 140mph) at 140 at various points on the ECML using flashing green lights aspect for 140mph permission. As you have...

    Class 700s Being 'Refreshed"

Indeed, and i think I did cover that, albeit in a slightly roundabout way in point 1 and 3 (they didnt think it was important at the time, it was a long time back). It does highlight something though, When such large programmes such as "Thameslink" and "IET" often involved by DFT, or other...

    Class 175s to GWR

I always felt that the Coradias (175 +180) and Junipers (original 458/0, 460, 334) if they had been built well could have been some really nice units. I have ridding on the original 458 and despite everything, they were really smooth comfy units for us passengers. Its just you knew some aspects...

    Class 700s Being 'Refreshed"

It was down to how they were "procured". They were procured a long time ago by the Thameslink Programme (Not GTR), which was heavily DFT involved, and not by the operator (first FCC, then GTR), and I assume someone either didn’t think it was important, forgot, or it was such a while back they...

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

May be a convtroversial view, but i am going to miss the 458, especially in the original 458/0 - guise (and the 460 in its pre conversion). I am aware the 458/0 were initially a very troubled train, though Wimbledon certain did their magic on them. Prior to 2009 I didnt live on the SWT/SWR...

Why does LNER use the Azuma branding?

Not everyone calls the "Arterio" branding a complete nonsense. My Wife who is hardly a train nerd (unlike me), actively looks for the Arterio name on any announcements, or screens, and entirely on her own accord after discovering them one day coming home from work. In her view she prefers them...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

My Wife, who is not a train geek or anythign like that, activly seeks out the "arterios" (as she refers to them) when commuting due to the better space, capacity, and AC, and even has figured out the times when there is an arterio service from feltham in the mornings, and times herself to catch...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: should full power be used in normal operation?

probably getting a little off here, but older ATO often still used fixed blocks, and simple mechanics internally, and didnt take into account the speed of the train ahead (the Vic Line was originally created in the 60s, and whilst remarkable for its time, didnt have the processing to do what...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: should full power be used in normal operation?

Oh, I am not sure if i was clear in my post, but i was deifinately NOT suggesting doing anything wrong like applying speeding, or breaking rules! I was simplying implying that we have an established safe "perfromance" which can including things like acceleration, speed, dwell times, etc, giving...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

To be fair, (and to follow on from my comment just above yours). Its possible the policy is designed to allow the 701s to fit with operation of other stock also on the line, including the 455. Using the full performance at the moment may not be beneficial, and may actually cause further issues...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains: should full power be used in normal operation?

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/class-701-aventra-trains-for-south-western-railway-progress-updates.148717/ Not a train driver, nor anyone associated with the railway, so take what I am about to say as an "ignorant" couch opinion... If I was trying to utilise...

HS2 Colne Valley Viaduct construction updates

That is just so beautiful. I thought for a moment that it was one of the CGI renders shown years ago visualising the viaduct! So polished and gleaming. I know many look down at modern architecture, compared to Victorian examples, but I think this is special in it's own right, and I do forsee...

Trivia: Stations that still have BR era (or older) signage?

The W&C "boarding" platforms at Waterloo still have the NSE trapeziods on them, and in fairly decent condition, however the yellow warning line is painted right over them. Do not have a photo, but I am sure it can be googled. Not sure of the alighting platform also has the signs (usually too...

Examples of modern rolling stock which have improved passenger comfort, compared to what ran previously.

I think it was down to the 387s being 110mph capable (and possibly faster accellerating), which is needed on the fast lines to avoid being a bottleneck with the 80x/180s. also the gangways may have been a factor.

Trivia: Stations which have had platforms removed.

Surprised no-one mentioned (arguably) one of the biggest reductions within Greater London, Willesden Junction, which at one time had platforms on the WCML, as well as for the West London Line, and back towards the NLL to richmond and GWR, as well as the current DC, and 4 platforms (instead of...
