West Highland train looping the loop

Yes, on Sundays during the blockade of Glasgow Central Low Level in March-May 2022, there were services round the Hyndland West Curve.

EMR to introduce reduced Inter City service from Monday 20th July

Neither of those proposals would work during a Thameslink core block where Thameslink need to borrow one of the EMR platforms (or during disruption, for that matter). With a 5-car fleet, the platforming can be re-jigged to allow a spare platform for Thameslink without cancelling any EMR trains...

    Cumbria Travel Pass

I used a 1-day Cumbria Travel Pass last month, with no problems. I bought it from one of the Avanti ticket machines at Preston (which issued it on CCST). I used it on numerous trains between Lancaster and Barrow, and up to Windermere, as well as five Stagecoach buses - I was expecting at least...

Limpley Stoke Bridge Strike (Monday 23/03/2026)

So, my reading of the rules is that anything between 4.180m and 4.279m high would be signed as 4.1m, and anything between 14'0" (4.268m) and 14'3" (4.343m) would be signed as 13'9". So a bridge between 4.268m and 4.279m high would be correctly signed as 4.1m / 13'9". This accords with the view...

Re–calulating mileages after closure/abandonment of original routes?

Per the Signalling Record Society, since 1863 the Paddington zero is at the former junction/boundary with the Metropolitan Railway:

Near miss with an access ramp at Norwood Junction station (RAIB)

In the section headed "Actions reported as already taken or in progress relevant to this report", paragraph 132 states: That doesn't exclude the possibility they were redeployed to other duties, however.

Minor south WCML retimings this week

Due to the Manchester Piccadilly blockade, trains are terminating at Stockport, and reduced to 2tph due to available capacity there. The xx:13 from Euston to Manchester is cancelled, with the xx:33 from Euston retimed to xx:30 in order to call at Nuneaton (in lieu of the cancelled xx:13), with...

'Ardwick Blockade' - February 2026 (timetable alteration updates)

Ahh, yes, that'll do it - Avanti are down to 2tph to Manchester and the xx:13 isn't running, so they'll have had to put the Nuneaton call in another train. Thanks, hadn't spotted that :)

'Ardwick Blockade' - February 2026 (timetable alteration updates)

The 1H at xx:33 from Euston to Manchester has been brought forward to xx:30, presumably to align with available platform capacity at Stockport (unless there's some other reason I'm unaware of). This necessitates bringing the 1S at xx:30 from Euston to Glasgow forward to xx:27. That in turn...

Closure of Bransty Tunnel (near Whitehaven) expected until at least spring 2026

Oh yes, I quite agree. But given the last estimate I heard announced publicly was "spring", the fact the timetable won't change until at least August is itself a shift in messaging.

Closure of Bransty Tunnel (near Whitehaven) expected until at least spring 2026

Any update on how the works are going? I note from RTT that, for the May 2026 timetable, the present service with buses Corcickle-Whitehaven is shown until 9th August, and the normal service with through trains is shown from 10th August onwards - compare the following two links...

    Ockley Landslip 23/01/26

In 2013 I believe the landslip occurred on Christmas Eve, and the diverts only started after Christmas (I would presume on the 27th). So Southern would have had a couple of days to organise things, albeit those were Christmas Day and Boxing Day so not ideal! Still, better than 12 hours notice...

Split ticket, season and variable train route

If Birmingham-Bristol is the same price as University-Bristol, surely the OP might as well just buy a Birmingham to Bristol ticket, and ignore the fact they hold a season ticket?

    May 2026 timetable

The issue with Roughton Road is that the Sheringham trains have to cross at North Walsham - and there is only time for trains to call at Gunton and Roughton Road in one direction or the other, if the train is to get from North Walsham to Sheringham and back in an hour, to give an even hourly...

Avanti West Coast via Settle (for WCML Bridge replacement next January?)

I think the comparison with the LNER Tyne Valley diversions (or indeed those via the Durham Coast, or via Lincoln, or via Cambridge) is very apt - they're always through trains from London to Edinburgh (and often beyond). This, I think, is something that gets forgotten when saying "diverts are...
