Northern services post TPU & new rolling stock

I would imagine that the local stopping services on the TRU route would require the level boarding that the new trains would provide to reliably fit in between faster services.

Increase of TfL Incomplete Journey Fare Trial

Isn’t some of this to do with the method of buying a ticket to the likes of Enfield Town, Brimsdown etc., where it is cheaper for people travelling to King’s Cross with LNER with a flexible ticket to these stations?

Least reliable diesel loco in preservation

One caught fire on an Embsay and Bolton Abbey Polar Express train last Christmas.

Could East-West rail solve many problems when there is disruption near London

Probably yes for people travelling from London to the Home Counties, but that is dependent on what the long term plan is for rolling stock, i.e. how long the trains will be. For people going further a field, HS2 to Birmingham would in part do a much better job at moving large crowds of people...

Northern New Fleet and Cascade allocations (speculation).

The curvature of platform 2 at Hartlepool must be less than that of platform 5 at Shipley as they are still able to fit in another track on the inside of the curve without creating gauging issues. Platform 5 at Shipley is served by the sister Class 331s without issue. I would imagine that the...

Northern New Fleet and Cascade allocations (speculation).

I would assume that Heaton’s allocation is dependent on whether the proposal to introduce a service from Middlesbrough to Newcastle via Durham goes ahead. Should that happen it would be worth using MMUs for that route and Newcastle to Morpeth.

Chris Gibb - fallout from HS2 proposal on stock and what are/were the options

I understand why it hasn’t happened / been chosen as an option given the original intention to build HS2 in full, but would it really be that difficult to extend some of the platforms at Manchester Piccadilly to 400 metres? Sure, it would be incredibly disruptive but there is a fair bit of...

    Olney Parkway

My choice of reopenings in that part of the world would Northampton to Wellingborough. My view is that Northamptonshire’s rail issues lie on its lack of internal and east-west connectivity. Being able to change at Bletchley onto East West Rail services will also help with this in the long term...

Italo to compete in German high-speed market

I don’t know where they’re going to find this mythical path for an hourly Munich to Dortmund service. I was under the impression that a large program of works was required to accommodate planned extra Rhine Ruhr Express services, at least to be able to run a clockface every 15 minute service...

What could/should have been done to boost capacity on the MML?

Or alternatively reopen Leicester to Rugby and give a capacity relief to the two track section between Leicester and Market Harborough and most likely have a shorter journey time than going via Northampton.

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

With all the talk about the inability to path Eurostar trains to Birmingham and Manchester, as well as the debates about how many platforms the rebuilt London Euston should have, I do wonder whether too much was being asked of the Birmingham Interchange to London Euston section of HS2. Ideally...

How could more capacity be squeezed out of Birmingham New Street?

It might have been mentioned already, but is it possible to build a link from Curzon Street to the Aston line? I was thinking that there probably is scope and justification to serve the likes of Perry Bar and Hamstead more frequently, perhaps by running a 2tph all stations service Curzon...

Potential cascade options for Voyagers on leaving XC?

I can see CrossCountry replacing them with bi-modes on their current routes, but in turn being cascaded onto the planned Birmingham Moor Street to Bristol and Cardiff services once the Bordesley chords open, as well as the Nottingham to Birmingham New Street and Cardiff services. The only...

Some (radical) ideas of how to upgrade Leeds to Sheffield

Generally they depart Sheffield from a bay platform shared with a Leeds to Lincoln service which departs just a few minutes prior. At Leeds they use the half of platform 11 or 12 which can accommodate at least 4 coaches. I used one to pick up my CrossCountry service to Birmingham which had been...
