    Dale Charman to leave LUL

How did he manage to come from Portsmouth to St Albans but miss London on the way?

Electrifying Mainlines for Battery Train operation (using Class 897 as an example

It's what they did in Norwich too! As well as attempting to build an electrified swing bridge, there are also 2 cables across the riverbed. I think the Dutch way is to coast over but I presume this isn't an option for Selby. Are there any other fully wired swing bridges out there? I very much...

    Dale Charman to leave LUL

I got the impression from some of his videos that Dale may have intended to join a local TOC suggesting he moved out to Peterborough possibly living closer to London earlier on. But for personal reasons that didn't happen. Interesting that the GN outer suburban routes used to be good enough to...

British electrification OHL dates (mainly 25kV plus the most significant 1.5KV DC)

Yeah it was definitely still 6.6kV but at 50hz. Just about every primary and secondary souce on the subject agrees with that as the scheme was to test on-board rectification of 50hz not to test 25kV clearances which would be the Styal line and the Clacton line.

Thinking about the fact Gilberdike is pretty much 17 miles from both Hull and Hambleton. It does make me think that the plan was to put a midpoint substation at that junction and feed eastwards from a new feeder somewhere in Hull. (Hull South 132kV near to Paragon seems like a good spot to me)...

Indeed, you probably only need 1 grid supply for the actual requisite power, 1 fs 2gsp is for N-1 contingency. But as you say, the supplies need to be independent, exactly what the level of independence is on the grid side I'm not sure. Probably adjacent feeder stations need to be in different...

British electrification OHL dates (mainly 25kV plus the most significant 1.5KV DC)

Yeah I think it's reasonable to consider CVL to be contiguous but perhaps titled something like "sections between". The Scottish schemes seem to be wiring many 10s of miles contiguously, so you could more easily describe them as individual sections (the dotted sections in these maps):

Yeah, I do see in retrospect how much more strategic wiring at the Hull end would be - I didn't actually know there was a swing bridge at Selby. The only wrinkle is that this wiring would need to be N-2 contingent lest a battery 897 could be stranded. This means Hull-Gilberdyke would need to...

I'm quite surprised that GWML is already maxing out electrical capacity since it's fully AT. Unlike MML which has the feeding distances (and grid connections) of an AT systems but without any of the required tracskide equipment ("saving money") apart for Braybrook - Wigston for some reason, and...

British electrification OHL dates (mainly 25kV plus the most significant 1.5KV DC)

Thanks for this, I was able to locate it online at this link (The Engineer, vol 201 issue 5226, 23 March 1956, p 261). I wonder from where 6.6kV power was sourced. The 1.5kV DC installation came with 33kV feeders so that would be my guess. Although at the same time it was only 4 years after this...

Another consideration is existing power supply. Although the ECML recently underwent a PSU, it was unfinished north of Newcastle and is basically only capable to reasonable supply the last big December timetable change. The infrastructure on the ECML as it currently is would not be able to...

1970-1974 WCML Weaver Jct -Glasgow electrification

I found a very enlightening article on the opening of Glasgow North I'll link here (Railway Gazette vol. 113 iss. 19 4 Nov. 1960 p536) it's only 1 and a half pages, I'm not giving anyone homework here! But it makes the assertion that Parkhead feeder itself supplied 2x 25kV cables going to...

Diesel running under wires on the ECML north of York?

Yeah, quite a lot of genuine progress had been made up to building foundations, as well as the relevant permissions to upgrade the incoming grid connection to be 132kV 3 phase. I think I just about recall some excuse for the project's cancellation being a vague mention of "traffic flows...

1970-1974 WCML Weaver Jct -Glasgow electrification

Did the WCML North scheme utilise Motherwell feeder station? Because I think it was actually installed as part of the 1960 Glasgow South work. But at some point it was replaced with Gowkthrapple feeder. Did this happen under WCML North?
