    What is a 'Mishap'?

Perhaps the former more widespread use of the milder term mishap rather than accident for derailments etc. was a reflection of the onetime greater prevalence of such occurrences.

All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

Does have the important virtue of supplying free refills of standard tea/coffee provided you remain within the premises.

All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

Would stripping the operator of the contract make much difference to reliability of the operation, or alter the day-to-day providers of the services, or resolve any insufficency of drivers? Perhaps in the Cross Country operation we have a poisoned chalice with no-one particularly lusting to take...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Has anyone seen any/many new build "pebbledash" houses?

    Caledonian Sleeper

I'm assuming it came "light from depot" once "something" had eventually been fixed, to take up service at Watford, outrageous as this may sound. The more interesting question probably is what were the implications for intending passengers from Euston.

    Caledonian Sleeper

In a sense that's the problem currently. Caledonian Sleeper

Indeed. On occasions when this type of stock balancing/operational need scenario arises are the unfortunate passengers informed of the unvarnished truth i.e. "There's absolutely nothing wrong with this train but unfortunately you'll be travelling on a daytime train instead and can claim your...

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

I meant the latter. In my younger years (1960s/1970s) the default option for normal bottled milk from my recollection was cream at the top, such that arguments would sometimes occur within the family about whose turn it was to get the first part of a new bottle of milk on their cereal or whatever.

    Dale Charman to leave LUL

Interesting. At the other extreme is any particular line to an extent regarded as the "top notch" line in terms of status?

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

Are examples of bottled milk which incorporate a generous layer of cream at the top of the milk still on sale?
