Agree! The GTR FOI stats are interesting for showing where passengers are standing in excessive numbers during off-peak periods which isn’t monitored by the DfT, but is important given the need to drive leisure passenger traffic and increase fare income.
If 12 coaches on the Cambridge stoppers as part of the Thameslink programme has resulted in it being harder to operate 12 coaches on the Cambridge expresses, that is a big downgrade.
Is that why there is a proposal for another island platform?
Dors anyone know if the infrastructure on the Skegness branch is theoretically capable of operating 2tph or has it been rationalised so that 1tph is the max that can be achieved?
Please ignore the rolling stock availability issue for the purposes of this question.
At the time of the 2025 data, there were 12 coach trains operating on some services on the Cambridge expresses 7 days a week. So it would just be expanding the existing arrangements to cover a few more services.
Is there any prospect of some extra 12 coach diagrams on Cambridge fast services from KX? The 2025 loadings data shows heavy standing loads departing on 8 coach services from Cambridge towards KX in the mornings on all days of the week including Saturdays and Sundays.
The current timetable would be efficient if the EMR service was actually capable of stopping at Whittlesea, but as the original poster has explained that does not happen and so I have suggested an alternative which would have wider benefits.
Nobody is suggesting anything about other stations.
I have been informed that Ely North Junction is the problem, no room for any more services. Network Rail apparently refused permission to increase the Ipswich to Peterborough service to hourly.
Clearly there is a path through once every two hours, not sure what takes the path in the other hour...
Greater Anglia may have sufficient rolling stock to resource such an extra morning peak service, they have been able to introduce extra morning peak services into Cambridge recently.

My suggestion was not to remove the EMR call at Whittlesea without replacement, it was for Greater...

Why on earth is EMR being given responsibility for providing this anomalous but clearly important morning peak service? Especially when they don’t appear to have compatible rolling stock to do so. It’s a recipe...
The station had 51k recorded passenger journeys in 2024-25 which is quite good considering the frequency is generally 1 train every two hours. The existing service level is probably suppressing demand.
GTR’s figures include counts for services arriving and departing Brighton, Cambridge, Peterborough and the West London Line.
- lots of standing into Cambridge in the morning peak from King’s Lynn, despite the upgrade to 8 coach trains. This will only get worse with Cambridge South opening and...
In the case of London Overground, the DfT data only includes train services operating into the London termini, so Euston and Liverpool Street. The orbital services do not pass through the Central London cordon at which point passengers are counted.
As others have stated the location of the...
Those Sutton loop services used to regularly feature in the top ten most crowded trains list produced by the DfT. Then the 319s were replaced by 700s which are given a very generous standing allowance when stopping within 20mins of the Central London passenger count cordon.
Amazing how a 12...
