Speaking from experience on Colas tampers. If you're training on the tampers, it took me about 14 months to pass my driving. Note, driving will just be an element of the job. Colas will get you passed out to tamp/ operate the machine first and then put you through a 6 week rules and regs course...

20 or 30 words was the limit when i did my MMI with DB. Keep it as simple as possible - simpler it is, the harder it is for them to tear into

I joined Colas as a driver operator. If someone is after a train driving license only, this is not the job. A very in depth job. You will need to learn how to tamp track, control the tamping from the computer and be able to do basic maintenance on the OTM. Thats alongside driver rules and regs...
