Operational Planning Specialist for Network Rail

Each team has between one and three Specialists and it's a management band so form part of the overall team leadership. They don't directly line manage Planners (the Specialist's manager line manages the Specialists and Planners), but do take an active role in looking after Planners and leading...

    December 2017 Timetable

As things stand at the moment the xTxx paths are NOT booked to call at London Bridge until May 18.

    December 2017 Timetable

Duplicate paths exist, the default path is via Herne Hill, once reopened and route learning is underway the paths via London Bridge can be utilised on the day but with the passenger call at London Bridge itself omitted as there is no guarantee the train will run via London Bridge if the driver...

Request stops: timetabling and other questions

Cumulative rounding applies to running times as defined in the National Timetable Planning Rules para 6.4.10 available online. Dwell time is defined in para 6.8 of the same document but interestingly doesn't mention request stops. 45s dwells are done exactly like that, alternating between 30s...

23:30 from Kings Cross to Leeds

It does need to run frequently as different drivers will be diagrammed each night. If there was a demand operators would do it. Changes can be and are made to match demand e.g. additional calls for colleges etc.

Or maybe they have and not progressed it as the number simply don't add up. There are many schemes people want but reality is if there's no business case then they don't happen.

23:30 from Kings Cross to Leeds

People get employed to look at passenger demand and consultants charge a lot of £££ to help you, (Google Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook (PDFH)), if the demand was there questions would start to get asked. Spare a thought for poor Retford whose last trains from London is the 21:35 ex...

    December 2017 Timetable

The WTT is published with trains running 25 and 26 December each year, these are then cancelled off via the Informed Traveller process. As each individual passenger and freight needs cancelling (or 99.99% of them do) then it's a lot of schedules to amend (I sent 50,000 downstream for one...

New late night services from London

Ignoring costs and resources ditching Section 4 access isn't necessarily an issue if people don't moan when the railway is shut via blockades or six weekends in a row... Maintenance has to be done, Network Rail can't win, we want 24 hour services but we also want our railways to be safe and...

Timetablers: do you enjoy the challenge of engineering work?

The TOC will bid to NR a strike plan based on what it can resource and run, in short cancel the entire service from a given time, upload new plan. Well, never quite that simple but you get the point. It's a TOC driven plan rather than Network Rail imposing a restriction of use and having to...

Timetablers: do you enjoy the challenge of engineering work?

Like anything some enjoy the challenge, some don't. Personally it's great to lead on a big possession, always exciting to do something different, complicated and unusual. You can get heavy restrictions on rolling stocks on diverts, single line working over SIMBIDs or with a pilot, you get to...

    December 2017 Timetable

Always been a tricky problem the RHTTs in the Dec timetable. Some RHTT paths are used by freight outside of Autumn, others double as Anti-icing paths and I've known these to be used throughout the December timetable into May. Some RHTTs run after the timetable change in December though not for...
