1981 Pairs of class 50s to Coventry

The first 6 weeks of the 1981 summer timetable saw the final Paddington to Birmingham New St service on a Friday double headed, on 3 occasions this was a pair class 50s. The 50 were not in tandem, with the first engine being detached at Coventry. Does anyone know why this service operated in...
