They were always going to terminate 9J14 at Brum instead of running it through to Salop due the OLE issue. We’re so late now they may as well run it through and back work as the 1523 Salop to Euston

They'll increase the frequency by reducing the amount of units per service i.e. instead of 2x158s every 2hrs, it'll be 1x158 every hour.

Ironically a 158 is the only class of those you mention that can't go down there.

Not an over-reaction at all. If there was a guard on the train I'd have informed him/her. If not, you could always speak to the driver at the next stop. If the situation became urgent then there's always the passcom (emergency handle.)

I've written to complain to them on several occasions and never received an answer within 2 weeks. And if you're after a refund, whether obligatory or not, expect to jump through hoops before you get it.
