Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

As a heads up to everyone, sadly a person was hit by a train in between Potter's Bar and Welwyn Garden City. Currently severe disruption on all lines going through the area, expected to last until 5pm/beginning of rush hour. I'm guessing even after everything is fully cleared we will get a...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

I'm about equidistant from Kings Cross and Liverpool Street, but unless there's massive problems I will generally want to catch the Kings Cross train as it is significantly faster. If the fast King's Cross trains aren't running I will normally look to the Brighton Thameslink service before...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

And no improvement today. All CBG to Brighton cancelled and it looks like back to back KGX to King's Lynn rush hour cancellations due to "more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time". They're struggling with both their 700 fleet and their 379/387 fleets?

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Another great day for Great Northern. Evening rush hour and there are no fast Kings Lyn/Ely to Kings Cross trains due to overhead wire problems (around Ely I think?), and then a separate incident with the emergency service meaning no trains on the Cambridge to Brighton route. The all station...

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

I only wish the Great Northern trains had blinds (both the class 387/379, and the occasional class 700). The route between London and Cambridge is so flat that the only chance of shade is passing a particularly close cow. It is particularly uncomfortable in morning/evening commutes as the sun is...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

So as others are reporting, pretty abysmal reliability on GN lately (after what seemed some improvement). Since the evening peak London to Ely was posted recently, I looked up the opposite direction (as that's the one I catch) and it looks pretty grim. The on-time stat is pretty poor, but the...

    ECML Disruption (shock!) (01/06/2026)

Pretty much all GTR trains from Cambridge cancelled. Was on a King's Cross train and it turned around at Royston and returned to Cambridge.

    Fen Line Disruption (26/05/2026)

Great northern back to their standard unreliability (though benefit of the doubt this sounds not their fault) But Cambridge station really needs to rework their PIS displays. Their departures screen can only show 3 trains per page (2 pages max), which for a station the size of Cambridge is...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

The stats for Cambridge certainly don't look great, definitely worse than the Peterborough stats. End of last year they were running a 8.3% cancellation rate, and it certainly felt pretty poor as a passenger. Being able to claim an entire week of delay repay is not all it's cracked up to be.

Bemusing: Kings Cross gateline closed to exit

Just thought I'd share a rather bemusing situation just came across. I was returning home tonight from Cambridge back to Kings Cross on the cruiser service. After some minor delays we pulled into platform 8 and proceeded to the southern ticket barriers at the end of the platforms, only to find...

Train dispatched as I was pressing the button to open the doors

I can see the logic for closing doors early for long distance inter-city lines at terminus stations, even if I disagree with it (last week I heavily sympathised with a man at KingsX who spent two minutes arguing with platform staff that he should be let onto his train to York, all the while the...

KingsX to Cambridge line - Power Problems (17/01)

Currently sat on a train somewhere in the Letchworth area, and we are currently stuck due to not enough power so they're trying to run just single train at a time through the section This is not the first time this had happened recently, specifically in this area (I think the same happened last...

Great Northern Ticket Check - Trainline App Failure

Nope. I forced stopped, cleared cache, and even did a full log out of app and log back in and still got the same error. I would sympathise if it's a leap year error :s. Getting dates right in software is a pain. Trainline have got back to me to say they're looking into to it, but also they'll...

Great Northern Ticket Check - Trainline App Failure

It definitely works when you're in a no signal zone, I've encountered that before. I wonder as it's the last day of validity if it's an infamous off-by-one bug? Though given the error I suspect it's probably just coincidence.

Great Northern Ticket Check - Trainline App Failure

It is a full monthly season. Unfortunately at the Kings Cross gateline I was with a bike and staff just waived me through. Which again is an interesting dilemma of what is the valid part of that season ticket. (I have definitely walked through the gateline before if it is opened without...
