    Pendolino power stoppages

Sounds likely. Different sets mind - 9 car going south, 11 car going north. Thanks for suggestion

    Pendolino power stoppages

I travelled on 8.14 Manchester P - Euston on Sat 15/8. After leaving Rugby as normal we drifted to a halt at Blisworth. The aircon had cut out and the lights dimmed. A northbound Pendolino stopped alongside us. After about 5 minutes we moved on at a normal pace. The train manager said there had...

BR Mystex Origins and Destinations (Trivia)

I did a few of the Carlisle originating ones in the late 70s including the last two on the list. Others I remember were - Cambridge - off WCML at Nuneaton Oxford Bristol/Weston-super-mare - D1023 from New St! Cardiff/Barry Island - Marches both ways Brighton On one occasion we failed to stop...

Penmanshiel Tunnel collapse (17th March 1979)

Sleeper trains were a pretty full set I think, using Kings Cross up to Newcastle then Carlisle - the extra time didn't matter overnight and more capacity along the Tyne Valley. Carlisle was so busy that at least one used the station avoiding line and changed crews at Bog Junction to the west of...

Penmanshiel Tunnel collapse (17th March 1979)

From memory these changed traction on the curve at Carstairs. They stopped at Carlisle but not for passenger use - not sure where else. Formed of aircon MkII first class mainly I think.

Substation fire / Heathrow rail closed (21/03/25) - Rail Discussion Only

Joined the 8.15 Manchester P to Euston at Macclesfield and its very quiet though maybe too early a departure for the diverted arrivals at MAN.

Disruption due to an issue at Dawlish (18/10)

Line through Macclesfield closed all day due to debris in the overhead lines between 'Stoke and Stockport' but presumably Kidsgrove and Cheadle Hulme looking at alternative options offered

    Manchester Airport Redevelopment

Interesting about T3 thanks - going to be lively in there at peak hen and stag party times! Wonder if they'll extend the station walkway over to T3?

    Manchester Airport Redevelopment

Just wondering if anyone knows the plans for the Manchester airport redevelopment. I've been trying to find out what's happening online but can only find marketing spin stuff. Seems 80% of passengers will use T2 - where will the other 20% go as sounds like T1 and T3 are closing or is T3 being...

Carstairs Splitting / Joining services in the BR Era

It wasn't normally done - the southbound trains ran with the Edinbugh portion on the rear being easier to shunt it there at Carstairs. The Glasgow BG would be in the centre of train. Once back in Birmingham the portions would usually be switched at Duddeston.

    Avanti GSW diverts March 2023

Back then the line was single from Annan to Gretna. When I used the 8.40 from Carlisle to Glasgow via the GSW regularly the Euston train was usually waiting at Annan to gain the single line so probably accounts for the recovery time being before Annan. The Thames Clyde diverted to the...

    Avanti GSW diverts March 2023

For a spell after electrification the GSW Euston trains were 50 hauled. A few 50s were retained on WCML for trips such as this plus Barrow/Blackpool/Manchester/Liverpool runs from Preston as I don't think there were enough 47/4s for the ETH stock trains. 40s could substitute on the non air con...

Rail Freight Flows and News UK

Just seen a GBRF 66 heading south through Macclesfield on about 16 loaded Land Recovery box bogies - any ideas if this is a regular working. Unusual to see freight here. In the middle of delayed Avantis so following one will be slow!
