Working nights. And a rest day question

Most TOC/FOCs have a minimum amount of hours for a rest day, usually 32 hours. So if you finish at 06:00 on the Tuesday, the earliest you can come back to work is 14:00 on the Wednesday. If you think about it (unless you work nights constantly, never having a night off) you have to at some...

How far has a 08/09 travelled under their own power ?

When swapping the Carnforth pilot they used to do Carnforth to Carlisle, 63 miles. Crews used to swap footplates at Shap Summit.

    Squeaking 47?

It's the turbocharger that makes the chirping noise, blades catching on the housing possibly. If you ease the controller off you can hear the chirping slowing down.

Duty Free on Trains ? / Stations

There was a duty free shop at Kulata station on the Greece-Bulgaria border, never seemed to be open though.

What's the rules about railway photography in India?

Pretty much what Lou said. I've been countless times and never had much of a problem, but I'm always careful and keep an eye out for RPF officers. I've been told to stop once, played the innocent tourist and everything was fine. Applying for a permit will bring you into contact with Indian...

    FreightLocate Demo Service now available

Indeed, but it does beg the question as to why 'Snapper' suddenly decided to bump this long dead thread.... is he pals with Freightmaster perchance? There's bound to be some sort of undisclosed interest as that's how Snapper seems to operate.

    Who owns 'dumped' freight stock

There were quite a few aborted attempts to rescue them with the Carnforth roving ballast jobs, I have a feeling that someone had opened the hopper doors on one of them meaning it couldn't be moved without the stone being shovelled out from underneath.

    Buxton Spa Express 26/02/2011

Probably a bit late now, but Buxton SB is the Signal Box just south of the station and URS is the Up Reception Sidings a bit further south past the Signal Box, sometimes known as XYZ sidings or locally, as Donna Roo (sp?)

    Freight timetables/information

'Daccer' has given us some figures, if the 150m tonnes for 1989 (excepting infrastucture tonnage) and 100m tonnes now (presumably including it,) are correct, then traffic levels as I thought, have fallen massively. I've lived it.

    Freight timetables/information

Old Timer, interesting post and I can't argue about your experiences. I'm not doubting those new flows, nor whether they run or not, but 30 new flows doesn't mean a net increase in traffic. I do believe there has been a decline since 1992, the tonne/mile figures confuses the actual situation...

    Freight timetables/information

Try telling the hundreds of drivers and groundstaff who've been made redundant and relocated (I'm one of them) over the last 3 or so years and the ones facing the same at the moment that freight is increasing. I'm with Soft Mick on this, he's right about traffic levels.
