When was the last time Leeds saw a 156

This is plausible, I've seen the odd one do that as well in the last few years. Doing it requires a Carlisle crew as only they sign both the route and the traction. Shouldn't have been any issues with having passengers if it was only attached to a two car 158.

When was the last time Leeds saw a 156

This isn't correct. To do so would require Skipton train crew to sign 156s, which they haven't since Class 158s took over Carlisle services in the late 2000s.

1970-1974 WCML Weaver Jct -Glasgow electrification

The diversions via the S&C produced some oddities in the 1973/73 WTT, including: 1. Certain Saturday night services making a call at Garsdale (two years after it closed). I think to unload newspapers (which must have been moved by road to Oxenholme) 2. The operation of a daily Euston -...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I can understand why they would want to get rid of Bar & Block where they are the restaurant for a hotel. I stayed in one in Glasgow with work with a package that tied me to the hotel restaurant. I was quite content to have a steak for the one night I was there, but the menu was very limited...

Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

24 months *might* be ok once most people who travel have been through it once, but the digital profile only lasts three years, so in three years time there will be another bulge in demand for new profiles placing more pressure on the hopeless IT. It's just another example of an IT solution...

Heatwave 22-27 June - effect on the UK Railway

Northern have cancelled 4 Skipton - Leeds services today, allegedly due to the weather. This includes both the 0544 (first service) and 0744 (same unit), neither of which can be described as running through the peak of the heat. Does make me wonder if this is more about train faults (short forms...

Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

Does it never occur to anyone to test IT before they inflict it on people? This isn't just an EES thing but a wider issue.

Introduction of European Entry-Exit Scheme (EES)

To some extent this reads like Ryanair were being deliberately awkward (what a surprise), you would have thought it would have been quicker to let people through than waste an hour extracting bags from the hold. It probably also suggests the airport are no good at managing the queue. At...

    Settle–Carlisle Local Services, Pre–May 1970?

    Settle–Carlisle Local Services, Pre–May 1970?

All stopping services called everywhere. The service was composed of two Carlisle - Skipton services each way, a morning Appleby - Carlisle and evening return plus a single morning Garsdale - Leeds. At some point in the late 60s and likely associated with all services being DMU worked was the...

Royal mail parcel dumped on doorstep

But two pages have been expended saying awful the other couriers are as well as Royal Mail! Plus with better regulation Royal Mail could start to offer a better service rather than be in a race to the bottom

Royal mail parcel dumped on doorstep

In an ideal world parcels would be a regulated monopoly (Royal Mail), but properly regulated and enforced. The benefit would be huge economies of scale on both trunk movements and last mile delivery, might even be a role for rail to support and quite a lotnof environmental benefits. That might...

    Northern Saturday timetables

This isn't quite correct. The Skipton - Leeds Saturday morning service, certainly until mid 2000s, used to only be hourly until after the circa 0747 departure, though the Bradford service was half hourly from start of service with interchange available to Leeds at Shipley off some services...

    Northern to Dumfries

I think this itself is another anomaly. This unit may have come off a Newcastle - Whitehaven the previous day. The 1995 timetable has a 1600 Newcastle - Whitehaven. So this would be a "Northern" (Regional Railways North East/Northern Spirit) unit with a First North Western crew. Carlisle it...

    2026 UKR railtours

I'd wondered this as well, but I remember a 2+8 HST fitting in platform 4 in 2013, and I think the Elf Explorer trains are load 7 top and tailed.
