Agree completely. Aside from rangers/rovers being used outside their validity area (also know as the illegal “not holding a valid ticket for your complete journey”) what other examples are there — beyond what @Bletchleyite refers to in post #23 — of these tickets being abused?

Sleeper.scot says,"Britrail / Inter-Rail / Eurail / FIP Coupons will need to be valid on the date you arrive in your destination but not necessarily on the date you join the train for departures before midnight." Odd that it's different for ALRs.

Maybe they're making that assumption or maybe the steward just forgot. You can book a Room Supplement reservation without having to show proof that you have a valid travel ticket. But I take your point; it would be the height of brazenness to travel with just a Room Supplement and no travel ticket!
