well its certainly only really Reays on the sceen at mo. First and Ariva both run services to the city but doubt they would ever come in and step on SCs tows. Indeed I get the impression0First hate running as far as they do and assume they are being well paid for doing so to continue.

Moorclose 51 was in the hands of 16733, but thats down to Solo's being Solo's rather than the roadworks diversion, as was short 302.

There was an Optare parked up in Seaton for most of the day.

My apologies i will sort that and change it but on another note have you had permission off all the drivers to post there photo's on a public website??

People in glass houses should not throw stones :D

Sol

Oh dear... you had better take that up with all the other folks who take photos of buses and such like... enjoy...

Reays new 74 started last monday which resurected the old 65 route at the Currock end. They have a couple of un-branded MCV's on at the moment:D

Sol

They do... one of the 74's decided to come do Scalegate Rd tody from Sunnymeade which is totally off route. Makes me wonder if they are running an un-registered early 63 again which then goes onto a 74 and the driver changed his blind early.

Reays are saying they're winning the battle. Are they, and who will win, operator wise?

There is not a battle as such. Stagecoach have improved things since Reays come on seen but IMO Reays are not a serious threat and are not taking a great deal of customers away from Stagecoach having seen comparison journeys from both operators daily since it started.

Reays customer level changes from 1 day to the next. They are busy in the peak and the 63/63A's are heaving at school start/finish time but then again so are the 67s/68s. There is no customer loyalty in Carlisle.

If Stagecoach were interested more would be done to stop Reays from getting a foothold.

Don't know what you mean Robert, Where did you hear they where winning the battle !!

I have been told a large operator are ready to jump on board with Reays and they have 2 new Enviro's on the way followed by 10 more MCV's.

Its true about the Enviros but where on earth does the 10 MCV's come in to it? Doubt he will be allowed to register new routes until he can prove himself to the TC after earlier trouble and there isnt 10 buses the MCVS can replace either that would make any sort of sense. Unless he plans to sell them straight on and park them at his house like the Enviro 200s and older Enviro 300's but that would be totally pointless.

I can't see SC quitting anytime soon. The company tactic when it comes's to competition is cut fares and throw money at the area. If anything Reays are doing the people of Carlisle a favour in that SC will be stepping up their game and concentrating on providing a better and more affordable service!

Hit the nail on the head! The only winners here are the customers. Cannot see fares going down anymore or they will end up with a Preston Bus style situation where the fares are still not at a level they should be at.

agreed to a point Dallamlad, but how long is it (maybe a Cumbrian can confirm) til SC 's council contracts for some runs come up and these clouns outbid them? its a bit concerning, given what we know already about the owners, urm, success rate with other business ventures.

The majority of tenders were put up a short while ago.

nice to see reays getting represented on the forum seen as it looks like they here to stay i wonder if they will ever come to workington or whitehaven ?

also i wonder if this is to stop reays doing a carlisle to penrith bus http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/s...nrith-bus-services-1.929081?referrerPath=news

Nothing to do with any threat from Reays. They are just using 2 buses that would otherwise sit around all day in between school duties. Hence why 2 double decks are being used at all times.

On an interesting note however is that Alba Travel have registered a route between Penrith & Keswick. If it is a service filling the gaps from the X5 then Stagecoach have dropped a clanger here as Penrith should be doing that already to make it half hourly or even running all the X5s through to Penrith which is certainly needed in the peak of season.

typical stagecoach lilyhall they should of known that would happen I'm suprised reays didn't jump in there. if they put low floor busses on it they would take a lot of passengers off stagecoach beacuse them coach steps arent easy for old people or people with prams and wheelchairs

Hello, I'm very rarely in the NW area of England and don't know much about your buses. I'm from Dumfries and Galloway but I only see some buses from Carlisle every hour or so when I'm in either Dumfries or Annan. I think it's number 179 or something.

How old are those Coaches? If they're P reg Plaxton Premiere's then they aren't easy to get on. Glasgow have some 59 reg Profiles, They have a accessible lift, so people with wheelchairs can still travel. Although it does need to be booked.

Nice to see what looks like one of my pictures used as your avatar. Did it come from Flickr or Smugmug?

I am not sure Reays are here to stay. Like stagecoachuk above, I see wildly varying passenger levels on Reays' buses. It actually surprises me that they are still operating in Carlisle, as many of their journeys seem very lightly loaded. Changing the routes every few months does not help either.

I like the competition, as the cost of going into Carlisle is quite a bit cheaper for me than it was 18 months ago, but I really can't see Reays surviving in Carlisle in the long term. Stagecoach's response has been quite muted compared to what they could have done, which suggests that they do not see a long term threat.

I think she means if you got it from Flickr or smugmug? Bus and Coach is magazine I think...

Same up at Glasgow, I really haven't heard of anyone using it. I think they entered service in January 2010, but attached to the 2009 order.

it is the same picture im sorry i didnt know i will change it

when are lilyhall getting new double deckers ?

I have no problem with you using the picture: in fact I am quite pleased that someone likes one of my photos! I just wondered where you had got it from.

If it came from Bus & Coach Magazine online I am puzzled, as I have no recollection of being asked about publication of it in that journal.

Despite what everyone seems to be saying Lillyhall are not getting 4 deckers to replace the Coaches. Lillyhall are not getting a thing from the new order.

Putting the steps and accessibilty issues to one side, the use of deckers would be a backwards step in many respects. The B7's are comfortable, and have a good turn of speed. Both of which are needed on a route that takes almost two hours from Workington to Penrith and vice versa, and covers country roads and dual carriageways. Also, during the peak seasons many tourists board the coaches with suitcases, holdalls, and camping equiptment etc. This can be easily stowed in the side lockers... there would be no facility for this on a service bus.

I agree especially that Double Deckers would be totally unsuitable between Penrith & Keswick due to the narrowness of the A66 in some places & tight country lanes around Rheged & Threlkeld.

Not getting anything from round one. Round two when they add more orders later in the year however may include LL but nothing at all to support that, just a point to note!

In terms of the Profiles from what I have been told and please correct me if I'm wrong is that the problem LL are having is with capacity and fuel consumption.

Simple answer to the capacity problem would be to turn the short X5's into full runs to Penrith.

As for the fuel consumption, I would not believe a word of it without some concrete evidence. Stagecoach run a lot of Plaxton Profile / Volvo B7R's, and the AFAIK the only reason they have stopped purchasing them is because they are no longer in production (the body that is). Having bought the first batch on 54 plates, you would think that Stagecoach would have worked out if they're good on juice or not by 2009. Many of the Scottish examples carry out much more intensive work than the ones at Lillyhall, so why would the Cumbrian examples be so thirsty?

interesting, and a bit sad as always glad of anything that would potentially reduce a Worst bus presence. That said though Londons ok.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
oh and on the big profile debate - yes, westerns, Glasgows and fifes vehicles are very intensively used and some of the Fife examples are shagged out as a result.
Deckers on that run wouldnt be welcome by many and I agree the access issues could be solved by inviro 300s working the extras all the way to Penrith and redoing the timetables showing which are coach opperated and good for long distance/luggage and which are accessible low floor.

Yes, until very recently Leylands made up the backbone of the decker fleet in Cumbria. Sadly the only remaining examples are with Kendal for schools, and probably won't see 2013...
