How many are there?

I'll start the ball rolling with the Stagecoach X62 from Hull to Leeds via the M62. First Calderline used to have an M62 from Leeds to Halifax via the same motorway.

I presume we can't get everything from 1 to 99?

Stagecoach have the X38 in Devon (which runs on/parallel to the A38), Trent Barton also have an X38 on the A38

Good question :p

There are a few near-misses around here, especially radiating out of Bristol, but I can't think of anything that matches. In particular, the 4 in Bath does not touch the A4 at all. Ditto Southend; it is actually very poor for this (although the X30 does use the A130, which isn't far off).

I suspect London will have a few.

First also had M1 (Brighouse-Huddersfield-Meadowhall-Sheffield), later truncated to Huddersfield-Meadowhall (and run with Plaxton Verde Lances, good times 8-) ), and M60 (Bradford-Halifax-Trafford Centre).

Arriva Midlands (while as Fox County) had the X47 along the A47 to Peterborough many moons ago. We also had the X6 for a while between Leicester and Loughborough along the A6 (the previous reincarnation for Mike de Courcey's X6 these days), also many years ago.

Does Stagecoach X99 in the Scottish Highlands not use the A99 at all?

There must be some Route 1's using the A1 somewhere.

Somewhere, not in London
X61 is a reasonable one (Now Blackrod - Trafford Centre) used to run down the M61, but now uses the A6 until junction four.

X34 doesn't see much of it, but it does see part of the A34...

The famous Cross-County Stagecoach X5 uses the A5 for a few miles north of Central Milton Keynes.

A47 is now used by Anglian buses between Gorleston & Norwich via Yarmouth & Brundall. They for a while ran a faster X47 but competition with rail & Firsts X1 made it unviable.

And Megabus M1 uses the M1 south of the M6 junction.

Go-North East's route 1 'Coaster' uses the Tyne Bridge for southbound services. This road is now the A167, but used to be the A1. :|

I suspect London will have a few.
So far I have three:

  • 3, which runs along the A3 Kennington Park Road for about 500m
  • 123, which runs along the A123 Cranbrook Road for about 1.5 miles
  • 219, which runs along the A219 Broadway/Merton Road for about a mile
Some close ones;
  • 21, which runs along the A20 Lewisham High Street and crosses the end of the A21 Molesworth Street (but doesn't actually run along it)
  • 40, which comes within about half a mile of the A40's starting point at St Paul's
  • 100, which runs along the A1201 & A1203 crosses the A100 (but doesn't actually run along it) - it also comes within about 200m of the B100
  • 106, which runs along the A107 Mare Street and crosses the end of the A106 Well Street (but doesn't actually run along it)

The shot lived (first Megabus service to be withdrawn?) M92 used the A92 for part of its route between Edinburgh and St Andrews

I think the M8 (Dundee to Glasgow) uses a mile or so of the M8!

Allegedly (as I cannot find any detail about it) Waverley Travel runs an occasional No. 70 Bus along the A70 from Gyle, Edinburgh to Balerno.

Blue Bus of Shotts runs a No.71 from Shotts to Livingston along the A71.

Stagecoach X75 (Stranraer to Carlisle) uses much of the A75

Stagecoach X74 (Dumfries to Glasgow) either uses or parallels the M74 between Beattock and Hamilton. Never used it, so I am not certain how much of the motorway is used.

None in Coventry... particularly being as National Express is recasting the whole network on February 26, and the highest numbered bus (other than the 801 and 900) after the change will only be 42... and the second highest will be 21.

Metrobus route 273 operates along the A273 between Hassocks and Pyecombe.

Before Metrobus, Arriva had the Crawley to Brighton route briefly as the 23, running on sections of the A23.

London, Surrey... bit of a blur round here...
The 396 'twixt Tiverton and Minehead runs on the A396 for almost all its route, likewise I think the 377 on the A377 between points along that road - not sure if a whole Barnstaple - Exeter was done or not, but at least in one direction as far as Crediton.

Arriva Durham County's X66 between Darlington, Stockton and Middlesbrough runs along the A66 for most of its trip.

Supposedly uses coaches, but I got an R reg Dennis Dart with a distinct dislike to changing into 4th gear, quite useless along the Dual Carriageway A66!

First Leeds operated a X64 for a while which used the A64 between Leeds and York but was withdrawn due to low useage.
