more disruption at portsmouth.

Information is a little vague, but I see a train has broken down in Portsmouth, with delays expected until 2pm. Quite why they can't find a train with the same type of coupling/software (1 of 4?) And tow it out the way I don't know. From the scale of disruption I'm guessing It's over a set of points near fratton/ports s/s.

Nre are advising passengers to walk or go on non existant buses.

It's a broken down train at Portsmouth & Southsea. I agree that there should be a way to tow it out! It might need to be split if it was a a 12-car 377, I suppose. I am not sure which TOC was running this service. Some cancellations are evident at PMH, PMS and FTN, in addition to a number of delays and services with no report (presumably diverted). I believe Southern are diverting to Bognor Regis or Southampton Central, with some terminations at Chichester. FGW & SWT are also having issues. Local buses are accepting rail tickets and bustitutions are available.

Is it probably single line working between Fratton and Portsmouth Harbour if the line is blocked ?

Wouldnt be a 12-car 377 as they dont ever work as far as Portsmouth i believe, could be a 12-car 450 though.

Of course not a 377. They mostly split at stations such as Horsham, for example, on the way south! As Southern's Twitter feed hasn't mentioned it's one of theirs (unless I wasn't looking hard enough), either they're keeping quiet or it's a train run by someone else.

SWT's twitter says the offending train should have been moved by 10:30, and that all services are operating through to P&ss (as well as the harbour i should imagine) so any remaining disruption is residual.

also in regards to me saying about non existent buses, NRE were recommending using about 5 different buses services. only 2 exist. there is no service 70,71 or 92.

70, 71 and 92 operate between Guildford - Goldalming - Haslemere - Midhurst, and as PDL services were being delays, may of been quicker using this.

The unit in question is 450 111, spent 3 hours trying to get to Portsmouth today, and saw it shuffling away into Fratton Depot...

From what I heard the reason it took so long to clear up was because the unit in question had lost a number of 3rd rail collector shoes (not sure on how many) and was this was causing problems with the electrical supply in the area.

How do people think that happened? I hope that's not a stupid question. I know ice is a problem on conductor rails, but I shouldn't think it would have been severe enough to do that... ? :? Do feel free to correct me if I'm wrong :) ! I know buildups can mess things up, but it wasn't too cold last night, and lots of the snow thawed quite quickly, it seems.

A problem with the con rail might have been the issue, depending on whether or not a particular section could be isolated for repair you could quite easily end up with trains stuck everywhere south of and including Fratton. It isn't unknown for a ramped end to break off. The next train along will invariable lose a whole set of shoes...

Youtube even has a video of NR dealing with one that 'fell off' during a tamping run - in Portsmouth!

Nearly all SouthWest trains are clapped out and breaking down the blue ones are'nt meant for long distance in Germany they use the same trains for suburban services...

In the real world, SWT win more train reliability awards then anyone else, and Desiro UK is normally considered a specific UK product, notwithstanding the known exception in the far east somewhere or other...
