so, if you'll excuse me gentlemen for butting in, but
if we get the belgade connection
then we should hits jesnice north of ljubljana at 16:04
we could then get a 16:55 train straight through the julian alps. I've been there but not on the train, it's proper nice, the railway line does some great ravine hugging and loads of tunnels.
we'd hit sezana at 19:45, so 1 hour from sunset, it could be a perfect time to get the tram down the hill for a twilight view of trieste.
of course it would be pushing it, but I would personally go for this (fuddy duddies can get off a ljubljana)
if you got the train back from sezana to ljubljana you would then end up in back at ljubljana at 21:45, but this section you'd then do in reverse in the morning of course.
well, it looks great on the map so I looked it up, it's called the bohinj railway and is rated in peoples top 10

which i am afraid makes it a must do, anyone freaking out can get off at ljubljana and get a direct to sezana
the issue of course is we can only do this if the Sofia -> Belgrade train gets in on time, which it's likely not to.
BUT, we have someone in Belgrade station who speaks to us, I'll go ask her how well behaved the D292, Sofia to Belgrade, tends to be.
