Well folks.
I've just been passed fit by bupa to start my new job as a Northern Rail Guard! Really nervous now as its a big drop in pay from my old job but I have my reasons for leaving and this starts the path to doing something I've always wanted to!!

A massive thanks to everyone who offers us newbies and potential candidates advice and guidance!

It was a standard snellen chart (Big letter at the top going down to smaller at the bottom) The standard required was 3 lines from the bottom. (I wear glasses and was asked to do the test with and without my specs.)

Also colour blindness test uses the coloured dot style pictures with numbers in.

Third line up sounds like 6/9, thats the standard required to legaly drive aswell

Hi RRV Pilot could you please give me some info on the guards assessment you did and the interview question you were asked. Did you do two interviews. I would like information on the structured interview. cheers

My experiance was

• Application (Spend plenty of time on this giving as detailed answers as poss)
• Interview
• Assesments (SCATT, Comprehension test, Ticket selling and checking tests)
• Medical + Drugs screen

The interview was with the Conductor manager and depot manager and asked all the usual questions.

• What do you know about Northern (They prompted me for my knowledge on there routes so I assume this is an important part of that answer)
• Why do you want to work for Nothern (and reasons for leaving current job)
• Scenario questions (How to deal with a crisis, How to deal with an irate pass, What would I do in an emergency)
• What do I think the conductor role involves.
• Any questions (and there was a box on his score sheet which was a fail if you didn't ask any questions)

They also asked how i'd cope with shifts but I already sort of answered this as I currently work shifts and enjoy them.

Hope that helps. The advice on here is great and always helpful there are clearly lots of experienced staff who will point you in the right direction! Remember there is no such thing as a silly question and I'm sure as my career progresses I'll be back asking more silly ones as well!!
