I was just idly thinking, has anyone fallen out of a HST window?

Or indeed fallen out of a Mark 1/2/3 coach?

Wasn't this the reason there are no door handles on the inside of Mark 3s?
Someone leaned on the door and it opened under them as there was no CDL.

Wasn't there several incidents in the late 80s/early 90s in the Lichfield area? Hence CDL being fitted?

As an aside, my history teacher from school back in the day fell off a train in Switzerland and almost croaked. Happily he lived to tell the tale, but when I say he almost croaked, it really was a close run thing:(

also, what about on paowr door units, has anyone leaned against one and fallen out? The interior doors in HSTs sometime swing open when they go round a tight corner, so I suppose it could have happened with early power doors

Mk3s never had internal door handles. The only UK stock fitted with internal handles were some suburban units. I don't think anyone has ever fallen out who didn't open the door deliberatly whilst the train was moving. There is a risk of locking mechanisms failing and doors coming open, but there is the same risk with power door stock too.

I remember reading in an article on Selhurst depot that they used to examine the locks on slam doors quite frequently. Fairly time consuming I should imagine !

Back in 1988 a schoolboy fell out of a MK1 EMU at Havant and died, another person were sticking there head out of a droplight window of a 4 VEP EMU between Haslemere & Guildford and they were stuck by a train coming the other way although they survived they were left with severe brain damage, I believe this was back in the early 1990's

53 incidents of people falling out of HSTs were looked at in a report I found on google published in 1993.

"Most of the incidents that have been investigated show that alcohol or misbehaviour was a factor in one degree or another."

I recall reading in a article in Rail magazine dating from as recent as 1996 that has a report of a man jumping from a HST after a fire inside, and being struck by a passing train.

I witnessed an incident some years ago, when on opening a door (outwards of course) to join an HST at Bristol Parkway a young chap fell out onto the platform. This practice still goes on when some young people seem more comfortable sitting on the floor in the vestibule areas than in a proper seat even there is plenty of room available.

Just for completeness [1], Mk.2Ds originally had internal handles as the droplights were not openable due to the air conditioning.

There were several fatalities, so the handles were first covered by a shield to make them less easy to open accidentally, then finally removed and plated over, and opening droplights fitted.

[1] yes I know we are talking about Mk.3s and HST's :)

I'm sure i read that a man jumped out of the window of an hst somewhere in Cornwall in the last month or so, after hiding from an RPI in the toilets he jumped out of a window after the doors locked at a station

I recall a chap at Oxford who attempted to board an HST as it was pulling away from the station.

It was shortly after the introduction of central door locking and after chucking his bag through the open window, he attempted to open the door whilst clinging on.

Sadly he was fatally injured when his attempts to open the door failed and he fell.

One HST left Fishguard Harbour in the 90s with a door open, saw it pictured in RAIL Magazine at the time.

So I've heard as well. Next time I see the usually reliable source I know, I'll ask him (his knowledge is beyond encyclopaedic - it is scary!)

I've seen what happens when you add a mobility scooter into the door equation...

Not really sure about that article/video's claims that the scooter would derail a Metro train - the scooters themselves are largely plastic while the train would almost certainly be slowing to stop at the platform anyway.

Wasn't the infamous "Tamworth Triangle" so named for people falling from trains?

When I started on South Eastern the slam door stock was being phased out but I can remember a unit that had OOR wheels as a result of a lathe fault and had vibrated like a "melon farmer" and had worn out all of the door locks as a result.

Pray tell... <D

Was it the Metro, where she went straight through and out of the other door?

It actually has some footage, I didn't realise there had been. She was really lucky not to be hurt.

That was it - there was one at Howdon IIRC and the other was at Brockley Whins. Lot of damage to the doors (apparently a mobility scooter will generate force upto around 1 tonne). No suprise that they are now banned from the network.

It was the other way around - after being ejected from the train twice he then dived in through an open window as the train pulled away from Camborne only to be ejected again.

That's such a shame. Obviously unaware of the door locking. IMO trains with droplights should not be fitted with door locks. It makes things a bit safer as it would have avoided accidents like this. Average sized people can still jump through the window of a moving train today. Obviously on power door stock that doesn't apply.

Errr you're saying that HSTs shouldn't have CDL. Just to come to a clear understanding here.

So what happens when you're doing 125MPH and little Johny leans on the door and it opens?
