It seems there are a few instances at my station (Brighton) where the machines reject either an advanced purchased ticket for the day or recently it also rejected a ticket I bought for the day at the ticket office!

Thankfully, it was not a busy time, but I would not have been happy if I had missed a train cos of waiting to be cleared by the gateline assistant.

I guess barriers do 'speed up' things in most cases but they don't like some ticket types!!

If you left an extra minute or two, you might not be at risk of missing your train (although I will freely admit that I sometimes come within seconds of failing to get onboard the train I need to use, so don't see me as being harsh!). Having said that, I experience random errors with tickets at the barriers at London Victoria. I have no idea what the upgrade pattern for the ticket reader systems in the barrier lines are, and as such I am just putting up with it, even if the equipment could be better. It's not like I use unusual tickets, either.

I have heard of a comparatively greater number of tickets from TVMs being rejected, and they are perhaps marginally more likely to be, in my experience, so I don't know if that could be a contributing factor.

It's a daily occurrence round here. Admittedly the barriers are still quite new, but even so I'd have expected them to work most of the time...

Sometimes they may intentionally be rejecting your ticket, barrier staff can set the barriers to reject all child or railcard tickets for example to check that people using discounted tickets are entitled to use them. It's quite common in areas with DOO services for barriers to be set to reject discounted tickets so the barrier staff can check.

I can always tell when my oyster card reaches the auto-top-up point as thats the time I walk into the still closed barrier - a second later it opens

I've got used to my Advance tickets failing to activate the barriers, and don't mind backtracking to the manned gate to be let through. However I'm not very happy about the grumpy attitude of some of the staff who seem to disbelieve that I have tried the barrier already, and grudgingly open the gate for me with a .

Two of the members of gateline staff at one particular station are now so used to me walking through the manned gate that they prepare to open it just as I am buying my ticket... Railcard-discounted travelcards between 9.30am and 10am, as well as off-peak returns just after the peak restrictions end, are wont to give the barriers a bit of a fright! :D
