Hello all,

I'm putting this question on another forum too just to get some more answers, in case they don't use this board as well.
I'm making an activity for MSTS set in 1992, and I know most the locals were NSE 455s and longer routes being 421/423 or 442s for the SWML.

I mainly need help with the other bits:

1. Woking yard, I believe this was an engineering point, so I'd assume there was OCA's and other engineering related stuff with a 33 or 73 in? I can't also remember if 73129 was in NSE at this point. Also, I know in the 80s that Parcel vans were kept there in the day, was there parcel vans still knocking around in '92?

2. Clapham Yard, did this keep some NSE Mk2 rakes there and the odd 33, 47 or 50 stabled there? I don't know if anyone remembers the yard in '92?

3. Eastleigh, one thing that I can get right is what to put in the yard. Engineers is one I guess, but I could get away with putting tanks (TEA or TTA), freightliner flats, Railfreight boxes and some locos?

4. MoD Traffic, I have seen a picture of an MoD train in the 90s, but it was at a station and the rest of the train was under the canopy and made it very dark. I could make out a Railfreight box van at the front, was that all the Andover or Marchwood train had, just a small rake of Railfreight vans?

5. The Pompey/Southampton locals from Westbury etc. I assume it was simply RR Class 158s, 150s and maybe 155s?

I remember most of these years but I never was down in Southampton, Eastleigh etc, I just remember Didcot and the GWML with proper loud HSTs, 165/166s, 60s, 58s etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Regards,

James.

Yes with the rest being a 33 or 47, got that bit mate but thank you :). For coaching rakes, I was just wandering if they have one or some stabled at Clapham or not.

Also found some info on 73129, it appears it was in CE Dutch livery at that time

The Pompey fasts were a mixture of class 421 and 412 units (the slam door trains that were 15 mins quicker than the current desirslows)

The cardiff pompey trains were 155 then 156 then 158s I don't think 150s made an appearance till wessex trains days.

There would have been thumpers around on various local services as well.

As well as Marchwood there would have been the occasional ammunition train to Bedenham on the Gosport Branch Class 47 hauled these were still going when I was drafted to HMS Sultan in 1992.

Ahh the 421/412 Pompey fasts would have been the ones labelled 'Network Express' in the Timetable? The 'NE' is listed under all the hourly Waterloo - Pompey via Eastleigh fasts, and the ones via the Pompey Direct.

Ammunitions was carried in the Railfreight red/grey 4-wheeled vans I believe? That's all I really need in that rake?

I also forgot about 156s, thank you! I did wonder if Thumpers existed. I actually wondered if they did Salisbury to Totton like SWT's old route via Chandlers Ford, but looking in the 1992 TT, there is no local run, but I think the Chandlers Ford section was a F-O line back then.

Thank you very much for the info Paul, much appreciated :D, and if anyone knows the rest or knows a link to photos that answers it, it would be appreciated :)

Ammunition trains would have run with barrier vehicles between the loco and train, and at the rear - except between Eastleigh and Marchwood, which have a note in the Local Instructions in the SA allowing barrier vehicles to be dispensed with as it was classed as trip working between yards. What these vehicles would have been, I don't know, most pictures of recent workings show just about anything from Lowmacs to ODA's to VDA vans.

Ammunition trains I've seen in modern times have been containerised, but the older ones seemed to be Railfreight vans. This one from '94 shows the containerised ammunition type though http://www.flickr.com/photos/yorkshires-finest/4982630256/

50s retired in 1991 - After that it was a mix of NSE and ex-Scotrail aircon Mk2s pulled by ex Scotrail 47/7s with a couple of pre-159*s on test towards then end of 1992...

*Some 159s were tested as class 158s before their full fit out at rosyth...

I think the Chandlers Ford route always retained passenger status, albeit without any timetabled traffic, as the standard diversionary route around Southampton for the predecessors of the current Portsmouth - Cardiff services.

If you watch Cab Ride No.14/36 Combined Waterloo to Exeter DVD which ws filmed in August 1987 I believe you will see both coaches and Class 50's stabled within the shed area of Clapham Junction station, where you see class 450's and Class 444's stabled now which a few Class 159/158's from time to time.

Aircons? I'm pretty sure they were Mk2pv to the end apart from a couple of first class vehicles which turned up at some point late on but the vast majority was early Mk2.

As always wit SR stuff there is plenty of gen at http://www.semgonline.com/photoind.html and there is a decent selection of Waterloo-Exeter phots from 1992 in here http://sulzerpower.com/archivephotos/1992.html

I made the trip from Cardiff to Brighton in 1990, as far as I remember it was a 156 from Cardiff right through to Brighton. On the way back I changed at Portsmouth again onto a 156. NB: it *could* have been a 155, but I didn't take note of such things then.

I remember the thumpers around Portsmouth at that time for certain.

What really stuck me was how fantastic the Thameslink 319s look and the weird silence of the electric units (compared to a diesel engine sitting underneath you).

At least in October 1992, there were 158s from Brighton to Cardiff IIRC

The 156s were bound for Inverness but headed south to Cardiff in December 1988 to cover for the withdrawal of the 155s, by 1991 155s were back in service and began to be supplemented by 158s. 150s put in some appearances from 1992.

I remember getting a 3D Thumper (Class 207) between Reading and Basingstoke once. Think it would have been around 1990, so I'm not sure whether they were still in that area by 1992.

I think your right. Many of the photos & films ive seen of the Waterloo-Exeters are of long rakes of PV's.

May i suggest putting each of your locations into the "search" in Flickr? It is amazing what old stuff you find!

NSE only ever had 2 x A/C Mk2's both Mk2D FK's. one even made it into NSE livery but that was around 1993.

Cross Country services would have been loco-hauled on 47/8s Basingstoke-Poole. I don't think HSTs came in until after 1992?

With regards to freight traffic, I remember seeing a couple of Petroleum sector 37s hauling a long train of oil tankers (can't remember the TOPS code) near Porchester station in 1993/4 heading towards Southampton Central. I'm assuming the train originated at an oil terminal near Chichester served by a short branch of the West Coastway line and was probably running empty to Fawley refinery.

Around the same time I also saw a 466 on test near Porchester, along with a 319 in passenger service at Eastleigh station. Unfortunately I can't find a photo of a 466 anywhere near the Portsmouth station at the moment.

Plenty of car traffic in the Soton area - Transits loaded from Swaythiling , A Tolemans depot at Eastleight - both Cartics and FWV/FMA flats -

MOD trains also used PFA & PFB wagons for vehicles , odd international wagons for MOD stores to Germany etc. (IPA and IPB)
