my understanding is that the roller coaster isnt in the park itself.
it says 2 of the 3 signature rides arent.

aggh, they've turned wiki off.

humf, may be it is in the park, this guy did it six times

I'm yielding a little, though the lift to the top of the tower for 5 bucks might suffice.

well, you get the 4 bucks off for the funicular, but we're only going on it one way, the other one is part of the standard metro anyway, there's also the blue tram fare which is extra.

Is it worth looking on this hostels site for a bag drop somewhere that suits?
my only problem with lockers is that with everyone having their own then someone is going to find they've a locker that doesnt work, if we double up the chances are only halved and one person is going to freak out at the one who lost the key, etc.
it looks like we have to do this in prague, but it seems overkill if they've got proper lockers elsewhere.

Glen: Interesting that the train maniacs should consider the roller coaster "collector" to be weird. Have you considered what the "outside world" must think of this entire site? But then, I personally don't care what they think. Most of them probably think of a train as only a means of conveyance.

Damn right I do. There is nothing quite like a schism between similar groups of fanatics.

Have you considered what the "outside world" must think of this entire site?

Not much chance of the unenlightened stumbling into this. They will all have doctors' notes saying that they are too well to participate.

Isn't that what Italian political parties are made of?

I don't know about Italian politics but there are two separate groups here interested in preserving the same railway in North Wales. (The Welsh Highland) For years they barely spoke to each other and even threatened each other with legal action from time to time. It looks like there has been some sort of truce called recently.

There are another two groups who are trying to restore the Glyn Valley Tramway who can't even agree on what gauge it should be rebuilt on.

I think that it must have been a fanatic who spotted the first heretic.

Similar story out here. Two groups fighting over the restoration of a "Wild West" steamer passenger train. The "Authentics" want no up-grades. Other group wanted a few concessions to modcons. Authentics won out so tourists had to open windows because no A/C and fumes, soot and cinders rained in on them as they sat on their unpadded hard wooden slat seats. Very authentic, but the line went bankrupt.

excellent.

more good news just in, the arse breaking bus ride from fauske to narvik could be replaced by a 1 hour 35 minute flight, at the same price, and with 2 hours total in Bodo. So a bit more track , time to get food for the arrival in narvik though we will also be able to get a hot meal in Narvik anyway.

bodo to narvik
http://www.wideroe.no/index.asp?ds=off

the evening flights arent showing during the summer months, but they dont reappear anyway, I cant believe they dont run evening flights during 24 hour daylight.

Flights for £15 quid? Are you sure this isn't some sort of Ryanair come on with additional charges for luggage, seats, using the bog, getting off etc?

was it only £15, this will be about £40, but means you can at least enjoy the midnight sun a bit instead of being utterly buggered from a 5 hour coach trip.
it's cheating a bit but it's not like we're missing any track, and actually the bit from fauske to bodo is the best bit of the trondhiem-bodo line I read somewhere.

I'm guessing here but if it's "Man Overboard" it doesn't sound as useful for our mission as "Get on board *****"

Sounds OK if we can get us all on at that price. I'm no fan of 5 hour coach trips. It might up the beer requirement for the Scando stretch a bit.

Is that what the Cockney Conductors yell in the UK? How rude. In the US is always "All aboard!" A very warm and welcomed phrase for all trainoholics.

One Man Operated.

If you are a fan of Cockney Conductors try Googling "On the buses" - possibly the worst film ever made.

It is universally accepted that the worst movie ever made was "Plan 9 From Planet X" by Ed Woods. Again I recommend you view "Kontroll"...the Hungarian Metro film. Just don't get on the train driven by Bela bacsi!

Over here the Ed Wood movie was called "Plan 9 from Outer Space" That was so bad it was brilliant. I have a tape of it somewhere.

"On the Buses" is much, much worse.

I'll have to have a dig around for Kontroll. Bit difficult as we are deprived of Wiki for the day.

Just found a review of it. Definitely need to track it down. This could kick start our appropriate movie sub-thread.

WAIT!!! OMO means One Man checks the couplings and trucks, oils the fittings, etc.? Who is driving the train whilst he goes into the coaches to punch the tickets? Are you having a laugh?

Wiki (and many similar sites) are all dead for 24 hours in protest of the US Congress bills being considered today to limit their free speech. See the masthead on Google today to give you an idea what is going on here with the "Tea Bag" Congress. E-mail your congressman or walk down the lane to your MP's house and bang on his door.

This side of the pond a Conductor works on a bus. On trains there is a Guard
although sometimes these days they are called a Train Manager.

We know why it's down and we are blaming your lot entirely

well group tavel at that wideroe got back to me with
Sorry, but from today we do not have this routing anymore.
You have to take contact with Danich Airtransport.

Danich Airtransport dont seem to do it either, it must be viable if they were running 3 or 4 a day.
I'll go ask.

I'll be encouraging everyone to take substantial supplies with them to the north, This probably needs to be done in Brussels, but will make the bags stupid heavy so we're going to need a locker-stop in Copenhagen. 20 kroner, in the basement, follow "garderobe" though it is believed that you get that back. So we all need a 20 kroner coin on the kit list.

Mmmmm, warm beer.

Do we have a chap(ess) on the ground in Norway?

At this rate the loose change is going to weigh nearly as much as the beer. Do we plan to use lockers in Oslo and Stockholm?
stockholm yes, oslo no.
I'm, going to work out the exact coinage for all of these and stick it on the kit list.

We've got one guy who has in laws in Norway, Oslo I guess.

I wasnt planning on overdoing the cold beers in Norway. a litre (and a half) of spirits and a couple of bottles of wine, per head, should get us to berlin with minimal exposure to the utterly prohibitive local prices.

Knowing what we need will be a good start but getting our hands on bulk quantities of specific coins might be a bit harder.

Norway isn't EU. There is a 2006 thread on the subject of Duty Free on Eurotrip which gives this info

"Alcoholic beverages: 1 liter drink with alcohol strength 22 – 60%

and 1 liter drink with alcohol strength 2,5 -22%,
or 2 liter drink with alcohol strength 2,5 – 22%

2 liter beer drink with alcohol strength 2,5 – 4,75%.

This means that a person could for example bring 4 liter beer but no other alcoholic beverages."
