Hi all here is the report from my trip yesterday to Bristol & Newport

Visit to Bristol (13/01/2012)

My day started out well after waking up at 05:20.

After a shower and getting changed I sat down for some breakfast ( Kellogs crunch nut) and a cup of coffee while I was watching Sky News.

After leaving my house at 06:30 and making my way down the street which none of the street light were on so it was a bit dark. Stopping at my local Lloyds TSB cash machine to withdraw £25 before I continued to the bus stop where I arrived at 06:42 having just missed the 06:38 to Bridgend.

After checking I had my plusbus ticket and my railcard and train tickets to Bristol and then consulting my copy of the timetable for service 63/63B I noticed the next bus was at 07:03 so a 25 minute wait. Luckily I didnt have to wait to long even though it was freezing cold a marshal bodied dart turned up (sadly not an Optare solo or plaxton bodied dart) after boarding and showing my plusbus ticket and then chatting to the driver who I know very well we were on out way.

After about 12 minutes we passed the Mc Arthur Glen out near Sarn and dropped off a few people going to work there and at Sainsburys I noticed there were a good number of people waiting at the coach stop so I am guesing they were waiting for the coach to Heathrow/Gatwick wich was due at around 07:30.

Eventually we arrived into Bridgend bus station ( still very nice 9 years after it re-opened) at 07:30, after wishing my freind a good day i then took a walk through Bridgend town centre and on the river walkway which goes over the river which runs through the heart of Bridgend town centre. As it was still pretty dark the walkway was lit up which was very nice.

I eventually got to Bridgend station at 08:00 and made my way through the barriers and saw a class 150 pass through empty stock ready to crossover to the Maesteg branch and reverse back into platform 2 at Bridgend to work the 08:07 Bridgend -Ebbw Vale service, a class 158 turned up sadly my camera was acting up and I was unable to get a photo or take notes but it was 1 of the unrefurbished units in ATW colours with white doors (that should narrow it down).

I took note of the new footbridge complete with lifts which was being built, work seemed to be progressing well. 60054 then came thrashing through Bridgend at 08:38 with the tankers to Westerleigh and eventually my hst arrived at 08:59.

Departing at 09:01 and deciding to hang part of my head out the window i spotted the 3 class 50's at Pulman rail and the class 121 poking its head out of the shed at Canton depot. pulling into platform 1 at Cardiff central at 09:21 1 minute early.

I then made 1 way onboard 158859 which was on the 09:30 Cardiff -Portsmouth Harbour service and we left ontime arriving into Newport at 09:41 I was surprised as I thought the journey took a lot longer so it would be interesting to see how long an EMU would take. We then arrived into Filton Abbey Wood where I spotted a good number of revenue protection officers (This I have heard is now regular) some of whom boarded this service.

Arriving into Bristol Temple Beads at 10:16 I then intended to go have a wander when I spotted 158763 pulling into Platform 1 to work the 10:31 service to Avonmouth. I have never done the Severn Beach line on a 158 so it was a bit of a treat.

I got off at Avonmouth to get some photos of 158763 and then get the next service from Bristol which would be working to Severn Beach. 150120 turned up at 11:40 and then things desended into a bit of a farce and the signal wouldnt change even though the barriers at the level crossing had come down, it took some time to sort this out and we eventually departed 13 minutes late.

A quick turn around was had at Severn beach and we departed Severn beach 10 minutes late. Once we arrived at Bristol TM I noticed that they had cancelled the 12:34 service to Avonmouth which should have been worked by 150120 most likely to regulate the service and get things back on time.

I then had some lunch before heading up to Filton Abbey wood and then Bristol Parkway to get some photos. I then noted that the 13:09 service to Portsmouth was worked by a very overcrowded class 150 whith a few being left behind at Filton Abbey wood. however later on in the day I found out a class 158 had been attached at Bristol TM.

I did a bit of bus spotting/photography at Bristol Parkway including a bus ride to Shirehampton and back.

I then headed on a service down to Bath spa and spent about 35 minutes there before I got back to Bristol TM and then going to Parson street.

I got back to Bristol TM around 16:30 and I noted that the next service to Avonmouth had about 30 people waiting to board so this just showed how buy this line is during the peaks. I boarded crosscountrys 17:00 Manchester service which I travelled on as far as Bristol Parkway.

I did a bit of night photography there before I boarded the 17:41 Swansea service as far as Newport where I did some more night photography.
Eventually I boarded the 18:31 FGW service to Swansea as far as Bridgend arriving at 19:10 where I then got the 19:23 Pembroke Dock service to Pyle which departed at 19:24 and arrived in to Pyle at 19:30.

I then made my way to the local bus stop and got the next bus which was 1 of first cymru's small fleet of Optare solo's and got home at 19:46.

So overall a good day out with the highlight being a trip over the severn beach line on a class 158.

Some shots also attached including 1 or 2 night or near night shots and at least 1 photo of a bus for variety.

Great report. When I were a lad, a trip like that involved seeing 300+ locos - visiting Cardiff Canton, Newport Ebbw Junction, Severn Tunnel Junction and Bristol Bath Road for the hydraulics, then going to Dai Woodham's yard at Barry.

Thanks my next trip is tommorow (Sunday 15th january) when I will be visiting Tondu and Parc Slip to get some shots of the freight diversions because the south wales mainline is shut between Swansea & Cardiff although the Vale of Glamorgan is still open.

Not sure if there will be any class 60's in action tommorow but tommorow there will be extra freight compared to last weekend where there will be an opportunity to see freight trains crossing at Tondu.

Finally hopefully there will not be any problems last last sunday where a few trains struggled to climb Cefn bank because of the condition of the track which hasnt really been used much since 2007/2008 when there was the occasional diversion/rail tour and the coal trains to/from Parc Slip opencast

I may also pay a visit to the former juction at Cefn Cribwer and try to get a shot of a freight passing the old signal box

Great report that! I missed you by a couple of hours by the sounds of it, my report of it will be up soon so you'll see what I mean!

I heard about the RPI thing at Filton, I have been on busy trains there before and no grip has been done so that could be why.

Shocking to see a 158 has done Severn Beach again! I remember doing such years ago with a TPX 158 and doing a return to say I have done FC to the beach!

Was the Portsmouth unit 158959 rather than 158859, as that's a Northern unit (I think it still is)

Sounds like you had a great spin out! :D

James, I think you may find the following link useful for that one. Hard to believe it was that long ago, and I believe it was that train we started the "AAAAAAAAA?!" thing on. I recall we got the "A" on that sheet of paper on it at least. http://techniquest.railmiles.org/location-Severn_Beach/

anthony263: Good trip out by the sounds of it. Are there passenger diversions via Tondu? Would love to get that route in, and I know The Coal Grinder's booked down it but I was too late getting my holiday time request in.

Was going to comment on 158859 too, can't remember if that's an EMT or NO machine right now, but I'm sure it was a typo for 158959. As for it being 11 minutes for the 11.75 miles between Cardiff and Newport, that's not bad. It's normally down for 12 or 13 minutes I believe, certainly the HSTs are timed to do it in 12 minutes but they're never on time in the day!

Saw one thumbnail that was surprising to me, the shot of a step-entrance Dart on route 8. Didn't think there were any left!

Techniquest the route number is 18 not 8 and yes I think it is First Bristol's last step entrance dart something I was very pleased with as First Cymru's have now all gone and their merc's and olympians are they only step entrance service buses.

The 18:31 HST i had from Newport did Newport - Cardiff in just under 12 minutes last night so it can be done if they leave on time and dont get held up outside Cardiff Central.

According to my notes it is 158959, sorry I miss typed.

Asfor the Tondu diversions yes they are back on there was a 1 or 2 this afternoon shortly after the mainline was shut between Cardiff & Swansea at 12pm.

I think a unit was kept to work a shuttle between Maesteg & Bridgend.

The Tondu - Margam route is in a very poor state in fact I was told a 66 took over 2 hours to do the route between Tondu & Margam so I am expecting a lot of delays tommorow as the 66's are really struggling with the 60's just about managing somewhat.

You also have an added bonus tommorw of having freights booked to cross each other at Tondu.

I was very smug about getting a 158 on the Severn Beach line as I know someone who has always wanted to do so so I did send them a pic just to annoy them lol.

The trip on 158763 was brilliant and was a lot better than 150120 which was terrible as the smell of bleach was overpowering ( A request FGW please try not to go overboard with the amount of bleach or at least try to air the unit out.)

I noticed a class 150 at Barton Hill which all the doors covered up I believe it was 1 of the 2 , 150's intended for use on the Reading - Bassingstoke route.

150120 certainly had very good brakes yesterday and they were very sharp when used.

I live along the route of the Severn Beach Line. Class 158s do turn up occasionally and they are a much better ride than the 150s. The Class 150s were introduced to replace the 143s along that line in order to provide more seats.

A quick turn around was had at Severn beach and we departed Severn beach 10 minutes late. Once we arrived at Bristol TM I noticed that they had cancelled the 12:34 service to Avonmouth which should have been worked by 150120 most likely to regulate the service and get things back on time.
Hmmm...interesting! Fortunately I wasn't awaiting that train but happened to look on the FGW website. The excuse give by FGW on their website was a "train fault"!

I then headed on a service down to Bath spa and spent about 35 minutes there ....
Good photo of that bendybus.

If you thought the 1635 Avonmouth service looked busy at that time of day, try it in the peak hours. The busy ones tend to be the 0718 & 0754 Severn Beach - Bristol TM services which are liable to be packed on reaching Bristol TM. I once picked up the 0754hrs Severn Beach - Bristol TM when it got to Sea Mills (dep. 0811) on a Saturday morning and reckoned, from a rough head count, that there were 100+ passengers by the time we got to Bristol TM!! Going the other way the busy ones on Mondays to Fridays tend to be the 1716, 1803 & 1848 Bristol TM - Avonmouth / Severn Beach which tend to be thoroughly packed also. I think I once counted 120 or so on a weekday (non-weekebnd) passenger service in the morning peak as well.

A good report :) Just a couple of issues to discuss...

What number was the bendy? If it was on an 18, you're a naughty boy for taking a picture of an enemy vehicle! On the other hand, if it was on a SPA1, you can have a halo for a present. Having seen this though has reminded me of something - I've still never taken a pic of a bendy, and I've been using them for nearly 30 months! Not to mention I will need one for a presentation due on March 1st...

EDIT: Actually, is that thing even in service period?

On a different note, when exactly were you at BTH? Which service did you arrive on?

Techniquest the route number is 18 not 8 and yes I think it is First Bristol's last step entrance dart something I was very pleased with as First Cymru's have now all gone and their merc's and olympians are they only step entrance service buses.

You obviously didn't see any 36s. More often than not, this route is still operated by step-entrance Darts.

Also, where was that picture taken - Parkway?

We lost ours a couple of months ago all of a sudden up here, I was most disappointed that I didn't get on one before they left after all.

IVO the Bendy was empty and the destination screen wasnt on so I am guessing it was out of service.

You are more than welcome to use the photo in your presentation.

I arrived into Bath on the 15:00 Bristol - London service arriving into Bath at 15:11 and left Bath about 16:00.

The bus photos were taken at Bristol Parkway.

I do remember when we had the Plaxton Verde bodied Dennis lances which inccidently are now supposed to up with First's operations in the midlands i.e Worcester. These lances were great when they were used on long distance bus routes in south wales shame First cymru got rid of them.

Thank you, but for the presentation to work it really needs to say SPA1 on it, so I'll have to pass. Thank you again though :)
