Should be done definitely. The roads between stocksbridge and town are small and crowded. Also on top of that, there is clearly demand as the tramlink has been an oustanding success.

Is this all heading to reopening of the Woodhead

They want to but at the moment its unrealistic. I think they see the ultimate goal of getting to penistone to run faster services to huddersfield. Woodhead has one major obstacle, capacity at manchester.

The don valley railway do not want to reopen woodhead but are kinda working with the reopen woodhead group.

Although capacity at Manchester only means slotting between a 2tph stopper, and slapping some four track back down between Guide Bridge and Ardwick, capacity issues at Manchester solved.

Well there are the electric cables to move into the service tunnel, move the trans Pennine trail (I would opposition would be great).
So this might take a while but its possible.

Everything is possible but is it probable? I think stocksbridge is a good start and people shouldnt get ahead of themselves. Penistone would be the next step. Giving penistone a proper link to sheffield. At moment bus is quicker...

One of the newest closed tunnels on the network, one thinks theres a chance that could be re-opened without too much hassle.

All depends on if they want to have two stations in Sheffeild, and just how much would be sent into Sheffeild Victoria...

You could even combine re-opening Woodhead, plonking HS2's station at Nunnery Square and sending it out towards Stocksbridge before cutting North for Leeds, would mean three stations for Sheffeild at Nunnery Sq, Victoria and Midland, but meh, Manchester copes with three...

And you could have Victoria opened in a similar fassion to Deansgate or Oxford Road in Manchester, everything calls there, and at Nunnery Square (in the intergrated NR & HS2 station) before deceidably sodding off to either Chesterfeild & Nottingham, then Norwich. Or sodding off up to Doncaster and Cleethorpes.

Not to mention if electrified the Woodhead route could be used by classic compatible HS2 stock (That will be going spare around this time thanks to extensions of the captive network) and could also form part of the TPE North network by heading North from Stocksbridge (on HS2) into Leeds.

So a service could run, for example...

Manchester Picc / Baring St (If a Flyover is there) - via Woodhead - Sheffeild - London: Maybe not, not much time gain for Sheffo - Manc pax by using HS2 over a 100mph normal railway.

Or:
(Liverpool Lime Street - Manchester Victoria - (Philips Park Junctions - Ashburys - Guide Bridge - Woodhead - Stocksbridgeish) - (HS2bR) - Leeds City through platforms - York - Newcastle :)
