I went passed the Eurostar depot at Temple Mills and I noticed that the trailer carriages (les remorques) of NoL half-set (37)3308 have been treated to the new Eurostar logo despite having been in long term storage even before transfer from North Pole and have never turned a wheel even once allocated to Temple Mills. AFAIK the carriages are only used for the salvage of spare components for donor to the operational Three Capitals sets and are therefore the internal Christmas Tree at the depot.

I know that sister half set (37)3307 was leased to SNCF of which it is also used for the cannibalism of components for the TGV-TMST sets at Technicentre Le Landy in Paris - but where is the power car (motrice) of 3308 stored?

Whilst on topic of TGV-TMSTs, I'm trying to figure out why they was required to be leased to SNCF in the first place, I'm putting two and two together hoping I come up with four...

I would guess that the original fleet of leased Three Capitals sets (3203/4/25/26/27/28) were demanded because a portion of the existing triple voltage (tri-current) TGV-Réseau that were homologated with 3000v DC for use Belgium had been cascaded for use in the TGV-POS construction, because the leased sets were French owned sets with 1500v DC capability they were leased to breach the cascade on the international TGV service between Bruxelles M/Z - Marseille Saint-Charles - Nice Ville, since additional TGV-Dayse sets had been constructed additional Réseau sets from the Franco-Italian pool have filled the gap on the Brux-Côte d'Azur route and the Three-Capitals sets are now used on the Paris GdN - Lille Flandres route. I also read they was frowned upon by both passengers because there was a excessive step between the trains and the platforms at the stations on the Côte d'Azur route and drivers who argued that two power cars hauling 18 trailer carriages were under powered on the steep gradients of LGV-SE as opposed to the performance of a conventional TGV. The leased Three Capitals sets have a variation of the Atlantique TGV livery with grey cabs and standard TGV blue/green stripes. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bindonlane/5801470993/

The NoL sets, that do not have 1500v DC capability and are subsequently allocated to the north of Paris, were required for the new TERGV regional TGV service in the Nord-pas-de-Calais region between Arras - Lille Flanders/Lille Europe-Dunkerque/Calais/Boulogne + plus the new electrified section of the Boulogne-Amiens line to Rang-du-Fliers-Verton*. The leased NoL sets have unbranded Eurostar livery of which they retain the British yellow warning panels. http://www.flickr.com/photos/27203581@N07/3537490882/

*I traveled back from Etaples-le-Touquet last year during darkness and I didn't notice that the section to Rang-du-Fliers-Verton had been electrified, I was on a X76500 diesel AGC DMU and had to do a double take when a ex-Eurostar set passed me in the other direction, I couldn't work out how an electric powered TGV was running on unelectrified tracks. :) Some pre-elec photos here; http://www.trainsfrancais.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=29665

It's amazing what electric trains can do....

I'm sure I read somewhere in the past that 3307 had been in service in France but cannot remember which half set it was paired up with.

As for 3308s power car this was at Brush Loughborough the last time I read anything about it.

Wasn't there a debacle over SNCFs Eurostar capital sets. I'm sure originally SNCF wanted to share their owned fleet across both cross channel Eurostars and peak Domestics in France but they weren't allowed to so in the end three ended up full time at SNCF. The three that are still there now.

There is another "Christmas Tree" at Temple Mills in the form of set 3201/2 which normally lives out on the reception roads(?) together with a spare power car. I'm not sure which power car it is, but it's at the far side of the depot and probably more visible from the road running along the perimeter than it is from passing NXEA services.

I may be remembering this wrong, but I think ALL Eurostar stock is getting the new branding, irrespective of status or use. 3201/2 disappeared for a few days last year which got me excited that it was being returned to traffic, but it reappeared later back in it's customary place. I'd have to check but I think this unit also had the new branding applied, or at the very least the old branding removed.

I HATE that sequence!!! A TGV complete with pantograph doing full speed on an unelectrified UK-loading-gauge line...
I love the way that hardcore rail enthusiasts forget about there being a helicopter chasing a train through a tunnel and instead complain about the pantograph being up

It's a fantastic piece of film action designed for fun, not a documentary on railway operational practice. Stop taking yourself so seriously and lighten up!

I think I read somewhere that they have a spare power car numbered 3999. ISTR, back in the day, North Pole had some body parts outside the shed with 3999 on them also.

Wikipedia says it's 3999, but I'm not going to take that as gospel.

There are a number of spare cabs and coupler "clamshell" covers outside Temple Mills depot. I'm guessing these are the parts you're referring to...?

Yes, the spare power car is 3999. I think it actually saw some use deputising for another power car in service a couple of years ago, or at least that's what I seem to recall reading.

Yes the additional powercar built as a spare is 3999, but given that 3307/8 has been disbanded for spares, where are the powercars from that set? Is the spare powercar sitting out in the yard at Temple Mills 3307, 3308 or 3999?

I believe the 18 coach SNCF sets are owned outright by them. Up until a couple of years ago the 373s were owned by ESUK (former BR), NMBS and SNCF as Eurostar was not a separate company

The power car from 3307 can be seen in the background here!

The spare motrice at TMI is 3999. I could answer all the above questions - except for a TGV running on a non electrified line... you've got me there. For other answers that I'm permitted to give - you can message me.

The set parked at Temple Mills is 3101/2, not 3201/2. It's been out of traffic long term ( it's the one that derailed when a WW1 trench collapsed under the LGV Nord ); I am told by someone in Eurostar HQ that it will eventually re-enter traffic; it should be the first one to receive the full new refurbishment within the next year or so.

Why the laughter? Don't you know about the 'other' tunnel they built? It's used by the rich and famous to get around, which is why it was designed to allow helicopters and private jets to use it too. Who's laughing now?!

By the way, in my old job I had a freelancer that wrote reviews and featured in this film (in a small role, but more than a simple extra).

It's a fantastic piece of film action designed for fun, not a documentary on railway operational practice. Stop taking yourself so seriously and lighten up!

Actually, I think it's footage of a new BBC documentary about the tunnel. I think David Attenborough is narrating it...

Regarding a NOL set being given the new branding, could they be thinking of putting them into cross-channel use, even if it is just on the current London - Paris/Brussels route, when SNCF's lease on the others expires?

Personally, I think GWML electrification would be a good oppertunity to introduce regional Eurostar services, with one or two trips per day from Bristol to Brussels (calling at Stratford International for London), using the NOL sets.

Apparently SNCF renewed their lease and the NoL fleet are to be used on the Nord pas de Calais services.
