I bought my Gold Card through our Company Business Travel Scheme to start on 1 January 2012.

On Christmas Eve, I inadvertantly took this out the holder and put it through the barrier and the barrier opened at the end of my journey it also opened the barrier.

I obviously still had the current Gold Card that runs out on 2 January 2012.

My question is at it does say renewal on the ticket but an advance start date of 1 January 2012 can I surrender the old ticket to get the void days repaid to me and use this ticket for travel this week or is it only valid from 01 January 2012.

If the case is the latter, why was it valid in the barriers 8 days before it was due to start.

I think the tickets are only programmed with an expiry date, not a start date. That's why it can be hard to buy them mote than a day in advance unless (as in your case) it is a renewal of an existing ticket without a gap.

Thanks for that.. Interesting point to note about expiry as opposed to start dates.

Also, the deadline for ordering tickets pre increase was 9 December with most tickets delivered to the office around 15 December a good 2 weeks before they were due to start.

When you say void days, do you refer to days added on to the length of your season due to service disruption? If so, contact the company that issued the ticket and see what they can do. I've not had to deal with void days for some time, but IIRC it is a case of having them added on your season or getting money back on the previous ticket, and as they have been added to the season, the issuing company might not do anything for you.
