I wondered what was your most memorable christmas gift you ever received, whether it be memorable for being an amazing present, or absolutely rubbish!

The best gift i have ever been given was my nephew, born on the 25th december!

The worst, a garden spade and a chopping board!

Over to you......

My most useful would be a toolbox from the ex, which has come in VERY handy. The best? A trip to see my sister abroad (parents have paid several times). The worst? Well, make-up and cosmetic bags are a real cop out. I could open a shop with them! And yes, I am a girlie x

Likewise!! I have about six stuffed in my bottom draw. Why do people assume we need twenty of them? Idont have enough makeup to fit in two, let alone six!!!

Is that not rhyming slang. No ?

Anyway moving swiftly on. Worst would have to be when some old relation knows you are interested in trains so buys you the WH Smith bumper book of Steam Trains. Yawn
Best for me was a scalextric set of racing mini's I got. And yes I know I was 46 at the time but so what !!

Well, this year I'm going to miss the toiletries and generally useless gifts that don't even have any thought or fun behind them, (warning: enlightment on my previous post coming) but the joy will no dowbt stall when someone decided he's going to try and visit me, or phone the parts of my family I will be going to see to find out why I'm not coming, I'll just ask them nicely to say I'm not there or something.

I know xmas is the time for family and stuff, but it's not only time of the year for family, and when the previous year's interactions with this family member involved hearing how difficult he has it at work while sitting in his newly refitted living room with brand new home cinema system and looking out at his new volvo and her now audi you can't help but feel bitter when you've come off JSA to work self employed 90hrs a week for less wage than when you where working on a till...

So yeah, I won't be getting any Lynx gift sets this year, nor will I have to suffer through biting my tounge constantly beacuse I've got to drive my brother home from there aswell, and also because I dislike confrontation and that I'm currently of the opinion of that I have more important things to do than handle him (although that will proberbly be the case for a while to come)

Anyway, best, I dunno proberbly when someone made sure I wasn't evicted by paying my rent up for three months, worst, a bathroom set thingey, with mostrisers and bath bombs n things, yes I may like them things that seem wrong and alien to you, but it doesn't mean that I require iffeminate bathroom products...

Oi, you can't do that. I thought you was driving my train for me

I'll take it for you, you can brake hard enough on voyagers to make up for not knowing where the station is:

So that covers the lack of route knowlege, and I'm sure I can work out the controls in 10mins or so...

(Yes I am being a tad sarcastic)

Well, not as good as actually having someone to talk to...
Quite a lot in my history I can't or don't want to go into, but having someone that you can talk to about it is usually a lot more helpful, (Although food & rent money helps)

Its just pulling levers remember !!

And yeah as long as its dry them brakes are pretty good. Not that I would recommend braking like that into a station though. All the passengers end up squashed against the front cab door !!

At least they'll be next to a door so theres no excuse for not being near one to get off, and it's just one lever and your bag over the top of the OTMR microphone right? heh

And I do remember once in SW Car Park at MIA with a passenger with no seatbelt on who made an imprint in my dashboard...

Does bring an off topic question, I know voyagers when you apply standard brake stages don't tend to use the mechanical friction brakes until ~30 - 50mph depending on braking level, when you shove it straight to Emergency does it just whack all systems into full brakeforce and then use the anti-slip to govern the brakeforce onwards from there?
I know they don't use anything but rheostatic until low speed usually since it saves brake pads, just sets fire to the power resitor matrixes on the roof if theres a stray twig in them... ;)

Firstly, no sound on the OTMR so can swear as much as you like !!
Emergency basically dumps the lots and gives you all its got. The sanders on Voyagers only work when in emergency too. The WSP system on a Voyager is excellent but it needs to be as because of them being so light they can be very light footed on a damp / greasy track

If thats how they are driven, i reckon i could manage it easy enough. I'm a late breaker anyway XC :D

Christ, we even had sound on our advanced tacho recorders, still, well, err.... I wouldn't have liked us not to have sound, and GPS trackers, and radios, and L85s, and resperators, and CS gas, and smoke launchers, errr. yeah; you know who I used to work for right?

I'd dread working out the actual brake force of a voyager, that curve would be rather complex... (Although you could model any point on the curve easilly, the whole curve is a pain)

EDIT: You've not driven till you've taken a DROPS out on an off road course with a cab full of CS, wearing a resperator and night vision goggles (that magnify slightly as well)...

See I like to brake early. I pride myself on my smooth ride :p

Breaking is one thing....It's going in the right direction!

Female question time: Is it possible to take a "wrong turn" while driving a train??

just remembered, back on topic the crappiest present i ever had given...a shoe horn!!!

It is certainly possible to be given the wrong route yes. Your route knowledge should prevent you from actually taking it though. Although there are a few places where it is possible to not stop in time before taking it. Bristol Parkway on the down is one such place

I'm sure there must be a "How many men does it take to..." joke in there. Just can't think of one at the moment!

If anything I was thinking that a "how many men does it take to...?" joke coming from the list of equipment I used to have in my truck cab with me...

What I really want for xmas...

My firearms licence back and an Accuracy International AWE .338 :)

Sorry to be off topic, and being old news anyway.
But is there a thread or article anywhere about this little incident?

Was in 2007 so I think any threads would be long gone, but from what I know it was a signal was keyed to danger by engineering works and caused the voyager driver to slam all on.

It's attached in another thread somwhere what my old uniform was, but I used to partake in activities involving explosives and firearms :)

Being able to do that again would be fun, but the baggage that goes with it is less fun.
