TW Metro - Northumberland Park

Hi there

Can anyone confirm or deny the following for me please:

Is the present Northumberland Park metro station where the old Backworth station used to be?

I thought that Northumberland Park was a new build (and a jolly nice one too), but my girlfriends dad says there was a station there many moons ago.

Your help is always greatly appreciated.

According to the ever reliable Wikipedia it is "located on the approximate site of the Backworth railway station"

I'll have a look at a book I have but I think it is a few hundred metres to the west of where Backworth used to be. Sure Backworth was located right where the Blyth and Tyne line diverges from the North Tyneside loop.

It's a very nice station and is a relatively new build - 2005

Backworth was indeed just east of where the B&T route leaves the Metro alignment. No trace of the station remains. It was replaced on the Metro by Shiremoor, which is closer to housing than what Backworth was.

The station is shown just west of the junction on old OS maps - in BR times it was a normal double junction just to the east of Station Rd overbridge, which is where the station entrance was. The two track brick arch bridge was completely rebuilt, and the station obliterated, when it became a three track formation along there to separate the freight line from the Metro lines, ie before Northunberland Park was built you had three almost parallel tracks right through what was to become the station site. Comparing old maps with Google's aerial view the east end of the Metro station island platform is just beyond the Newcastle end of the BR station's platforms.

Northumberland Park could also act as a Metro-Rail interchange if the ABT was reopened to passenger traffic (much in the same way as Heworth does currently).

Yup. Palmersville would have been the most likely candidate before Northumberland Park was opened, but Northumberland Park has the added advantage of a multi storey and some good bus links.
