Odd?

I was standing on platform 2 at Shipley waiting for a skipton service and a 333 pulled into platform 5 in the bradford direction. All fine, the doors opened, it waited then closed and locked. Now what is strange is that after the local door was closed I could hear the guard signaling (beeping) the driver FROM PLATFORM 2! Why is this? If it was a sprinter I wouldn't have heard it. On a related note does anyone know if 158's are cleared through shipley platform 5?

Maybe the engines are quieter, so you could hear it when it would usually be drowned out. or maybe the drivers window was open?

Yeah; electric trains are always quiet.

(350s are deathly at times, only making that wavering squeak sound.)

I remember the Class 308 bells you could hear the length of the train and seemingly from about half a mile away.

I miss the 308s, they were wonderful trains to ride on. Full of character.

I used to hear the beeps from a Desiro on platform 1 at Eastleigh, whilst on platform 2. Still often hear them in Southampton Central as well...

Very true. I remember once, on the way home from a certain Frizinghall based school, the conductor let us ride in their compartment the whole way and showed us all the safety gear.

Another time the bells had broken and they were having to signal the bell pushes using flags - of course the conductor's compartment had an old fashioned inward opening door so they could lean out and wave the flags.
