Richmond (London) to Dormans

I am travelling from Richmond London to Dormans this evening at about 17:00. Returning later this evening (around 22:00). Can anyone recommend a split/strategy? I have Oyster PAYG with 16-25 discount, and I will reach the Z1-4 Price Cap for today. Of course, I also have 16-25 R/C for paper tickets.

The last station in Zone 6 is Upper Warlingham, an Off Peak Day Return from there to Dormans is £4.05, however it is unclear from Stations Made Easy for [stn]UWL[/stn] whether or not there are Oyster readers that are accessible enough for you to get back on the same train (I suspect the photos were taken before Oyster PAYG was installed at this station). As there are exits both sides, it is theoretically possible, if you sit in the right part of the train, however I don't know this line very well so cannot advise on where to exit the train in order to get back on.

In the direction to London, if you failed to make it back on the same train, you could always walk to nearby Whyteleafe [[stn]WHY[/stn]] station (5 mins walk downhill).

Alternatively it'd be a lot less hassle to get a ticket from East Croydon (£4.90). Sorry this is too late for your journey.

It is theoretically possible to touch out at Upper Warlingham and then throw yourself back on the same train, but this is a bit of a risk, particularly if you don't know where you need to sit (I can't remember, sorry) or it's busy. You might get some strange looks, for one thing.

I would always go for the splitting at Croydon if you're using Oyster, the price difference is marginal by that point, particularly when measured in something arbitrary like chocolate bars. But of course unless I've missed something during the many accumulated hours I've spent there, touching out at East Croydon isn't exactly easy either.

You have to go to the main gateline up the ramp at East Croydon. Unlikely that you'd get the same train, but then at East Croydon you wouldn't have long to wait for the next one.

Assuming you got to East Croydon on a non-East Grinsted train. Otherwise it's still a half hour wait.
