As I type a 9 car 159 has gone east. Long train for a Saturday, so a joinification? And as I type that, an 8 car stopper has left the station going east as well.

That 9 car will be the Exeter service having joined up with the Bristol one at Salisbury.

Heard there was a large hole in the middle engine and reports of a fuel pipe ruptured. Unit returend to Salsibury at 20 mph max.

on uk.railway there is a suggestion this fire was arson??? Does anyone have any firm confirmation of this rumour?

Unfortunately with the credit crunch and unemployment ruining lives and the pressure of christmas as well at the moment this sort of thing is going to become more common.
Railways are always going to take the brunt of it because a speeding train is an instant killer and the person driven to the edge won't be thinking about the disruption,the mess and those who have to deal with the aftermath.
It is totally impossible to prevent suicides on the railway if a dozen people are on a platform how would you know if someone is about to jump i feel sorry for all involved including the victim.

I thought Salisbury depot was one of the best around, so I'm sure it wont be too long.
