Is it just me, or does this have nothing to do with NR General Discussion?

It depends on whereabouts in Sunderland you're going to really, but the taxi fare is typically about £25 on a Friday/Saturday night in my experience.

Why is there no service from Newcastle to Sunderland on New Year's Day?
It's an age old working agreement stretching back to Regional Railways days at least. I wonder whether it has something to do with Tyne and Wear PTE (Now Nexus) not wanting to provide the subsidy for services on New Years Day, given that it affects the Tyne & Wear Metro as well as the local train services, and that other areas of Regional Railways North East have always had New Years Day train services.

Up until quite recently, I just assumed that the rest of the country had no public transport services on January 1st as well, rather than my corner of the North East being the exception to the rule.

Doubt it, there's no services by Northern at all in the North East on NYD. There's no bus services in these areas either, including Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Stockton etc.

Fair enough, it's a more widespread phenomenon across the north east then.

If it was £25 then you are looking easily at £50 on New Years Day. PLus taxis are normally quite hard to get as well, so I'd advise booking well in advance if you can. The station taxis are provided by Noda Taxis but there are other providers in the area such as Blueline which might be cheaper.

The issue of running some sort of Metro service on NYD is on the Nexus forums - been pressing for it myself but with no luck. Too much money to spend apparently, with not many people expected to travel.

However, interestingly, the MetroCentre has funded staff to work in the UTMC traffic control centre in Newcastle on New Years Day as they expect a lot of people to be travelling there for shopping and January Sales. The UTMC can control some of the traffic lights near to the MetroCentre to get cars in and out easier. So if there was some form of public transport then the A1 wouldn't be as bad as it normally is on that day.

There is one direct National Express Coach at 1605 on NYD from Newcastle, arriving Sunderland 1635.

Presuming you are arriving into Newcastle by rail from somewhere, if you are coming from the south (and your ticket permits it) it's probably worth getting off at durham- it's 2 miles shorter on the meter from Durham to the west side (Doxford, Herrington etc and roughly the same (about 12) to the centre.

Sunderland taxi tariffs are online here

http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=10990&p=0

so looks to be about 25quid to the city centre on tariff3.

As far as I know this compares quite well to Newcastle rates, but you would need to book and probably pay in advance.
