Just a question regarding tickets on peak-time services between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh via Shotts.

On the 1713 GLC - EDB express service recently, the guard was charging an excess to any passengers with off-peak returns to Bellshill and Shotts. This contradicts with an announcement made by a guard a few weeks ago that only off-peak returns to outside the SPT area (ie: beyond Shotts) were invalid during the peaks.

Who is correct?

A Glasgow to Bellshill or Shotts (and the reverse) Off Peak Day Return takes the following restriction:

Restriction : B3
OUTWARD TRAVEL
By any train except those
timed to depart Mondays to
Fridays before 0900

RETURN TRAVEL
By any train

There is no evening restriction, as you can see. However, could the passengers have had tickets from other origins that were time restricted?

The passengers around me were just having a day in Glasgow and had a basic Off Peak Day Return from Bellshill. I get this train fairly often and this is the first time I can remember this situation arising. The guard had only managed to make it halfway down the first carriage such were the number of invalid tickets by the time the train arrived in Bellshill.

Most excesses normally seem to be charged to tourists travelling to Edinburgh on restricted tickets.

Should only be excessed for those who hold tickets from Glasgow-Edinburgh/Haymarket. Though a little discretion could be shown to tourists in this case.

Hopefully you mean "for those who hold tickets with a H1 restriction"; there are plenty of those which are not Glasgow Cen/Qst to Edinburgh or Haymarket. And I disagree that tourists should be shown discretion; they are only being asked to pay what they should have paid in the first place.

Yes, correct, H1 as you say. As for showing some tourists, and occasionally other passengers discretion and reading each situation individually, tough s**t if you disagree. No offence.
