Just been looking at the Visa PayWave map and I see that Winchester station is now listed (havn't checked at the station yet), does this mean that SWT are doing a roll out across all their ticket offices or are their supplier just upgrading their units as and when they need replacing?

Incidentally are any other TOC’s using this tech yet?

Nope, no contactless technology at Winchester yet... you're looking at the Winchester MOT Centre LTD, which, on the map when zoomed out, appears over the Winchester station logo ;)

It would be nice for TVM's etc to be equipped for contactless payments in the future though :)

PCI-DSS will prevent it from being installed on railway stations until it is deemed even more secure...

It would also have to go through ATOC as a TIS Accreditation Feature.

Use it on my local Stagecoach bus though, very handy.

I'm looking at one of the group of 2 at the end of Sussex Street, the bubble that comes up says:
WINCHESTER TRAIN STATION
STATION HILL
WINCHESTER
HANTS
SO23 8TJ

Not in use on the rail network yet but we are looking at what is involved to accredit it!

I know AMT branches have contactless, but Winchester doesn't have one does it?

Is this available on all Stagecoach busses with the new ticket machines or just in your area? I know Liverpool has this enabled, is this where you are? I have having to find change for the bus after a year of just waving a PlusBus season ticket.

Yes, I use Stagecoach Merseyside.

When the price changes happened last week, I was glad to hear that anyone paying by card has had the prices frozen.

E.g. Megarider for cash £11.50 (new price), Megarider for card £10.50 (old price). Dayrider is 20p cheaper, single is 10p cheaper.

Incentives like that should encourage more to pay by card.

That said, the amount of times I've been let on for free because the driver hasn't been trained/forgot how to work it.... :)

Stagecoach have had the new machines down here for some months but you can't even use free bus passes on them.

Mind you Stagecoach are next to useless here.

I know. In one of my madder moments I imagine walking through the train with tickets being automatically checked and and excess fares being taken from the customers card. <D

Requires a module update from the local council, to tell the ERG how to read the chips in the cards.

Expect smart cards to be rolled out across the whole of Stagecoach UK, and contactless payment, over the next 2-4 years.

Northern Ireland Railways already issues contactless cards, and the guard has one single machine which prints tickets and reads the cards.

SNCB machines go one further and have a 2D barcode scanner as well.

Can be done if the will is there.

Seems that FirstGroup are also rolling out contactless technology on the buses within the next two years.
