Project Mapping are excellent for, well, maps. They provide NRE with them, as well as producing the above. But because I am bored and feeling pedantic, how many mistakes can you spot on the above map? (Not geographic please ;))

I got:
  • Reading-Guildford on XC being shown as a regular service;
  • The omission of Leyland, Horwich Parkway and Lostock from TPE services;
  • The omission of Buckshaw Parkway being under construction, despite showing the Borders Railway and Chiltern Bicester plans;
  • The omission of Cupar from XC services.
The above is is exceptionally pedantic, it really is a brilliant publication and interesting viewing!

The absence of Stockport - Guide Bridge line
And the absence of the Runcorn (not East) to Chester line
Mauldeth Rd to Gatley calls ommited from TPX (although infrequent)

Edinburgh Trams.

Being really pedantic Carstairs should also appear on TransPennineExpress and Virgin as one tpd stops there.

He's sort-of shown Connect- as a FGW service to the airport. Which isn't, strictly, correct.
Regular NXEA service from the north into Stansted Airport? Um, no. During engineering/disruption only.

On NXEA's own map, their service north of Ely is shown as "limited"- not shown as such here (it's something like three soutbound and two northbound each day)

Reading to Guildford is a regular XC service ;)

Unless its changed wasn't it a 0713 to NCL or something?

You mean by showing it at all, or not showing it correctly? Even those responsible don't seem to know where they will or won't be going.

Actually, they seem to have done a remarklably good job of fitting everything, Underground and all, onto a diagrammatic map, even if they have to stretch scale and things like they always have to have that style.

The Stockport - Stalybridge section via Denton is missing.

EDIT: gnolife beat me to it, must find more obscure one

EDIT EDIT: As they're still 'technically' open stations it's a mistake - Norton Bridge, Barlaston and Wedgwood are missing from the Stafford - Manchester line :D

It depends on its definition of ''regular.'' The curve avoiding Bristol Temple Meads is shown as limited service despite this section also having a daily service.

The limited XC service to Bath isn't shown.

No consistency with what's considered "limited service" at all. Southern services over the Sutton loop are "limited", but those run six or seven times a day; whereas Northern running Chester–Helsby is shown as "not limited", when it gets one service one way each day which only calls at Chester and Runcorn, which isn't shown as Northern.

XC shown as being nonstop between Leicester and Peterborough; and between Peterborough and Ely
Manea shown as a stop for EMT and NXEA, and not XC
EMT shown as operating over the Leicester–Melton curve (they did till a couple of years ago with a Leicester–Oakham–London service; now this runs from Derby instead of Leicester)
No Southern service to Eastleigh
No limited FGW service between Portsmouth and Brighton (it's an early morning service to form the Brighton–Malvern service)
Chiltern not calling at Heyford and Tackley
TPX not running via Wigan
LM running direct from Rugeley–Stoke, not via Stafford
No alternative routings for the Caledonian Sleeper, despite some being regular and timetabled
Swansea District line shown for no reason (there are many other similar lines in passenger use with a far more regular service; Camp Hill for example)
GX doesn't extend to Brighton
Northern shown running over the south-to-east curve of Earlestown

And some minor ones involving station layouts:

Westbury and Frome avoiding tracks shown; but not Rotherham's
Manchester Piccadilly shown in two halves, but not London Bridge which is the same arrangement
Two lines crossing perpendicularly seems to indicate a split-level station; but it's also used for Nuneaton
Poole is nowhere near the sea!

Northern don't run Helsby-Chester except for ECS movements or a Summer Saturday Runcorn service and Northern serving Runcorn isn't included, as already pointed out.

I'm assuming you're ignoring the distance between stations not being to scale.

TPE serve more stations between Manchester Airport and Piccadilly than Heald Green. Although the map may just show regular calling patterns, but in that case showing EMT calling at Birchwood, Irlam and Hazel Grove is wrong.

I know it's daily (though I don't entirely see the point ;)), but I was more under the impression (from the rest of the map) that once daily constituted limited service!

The limited XC service to Bath isn't shown.

Neither is the once daily XC working along Crewe-Stoke.

No consistency with what's considered "limited service" at all.

Indeed, the more in depth you look the more obvious that becomes.

This is a feast of pedantry, isn't it!

It's the best way ;)

While the map shows the route of the Caledonian Sleeper, it makes no mention of the Night Riviera - although I guess it doesn't show the Caledonian once it reaches Scotland.

The Camp Hill line is shown - departs the Chiltern route at Small Heath and heads on into New Street.

No, that's just a small bit of the Camp Hill. It runs all the way south to Kings Norton, and other than freight it's run by XC Manchester–Bristol runs (to avoid congestion on the Cross-City and a reversal at New Street).

Apologies! I was under the impression that that proposed Moor Street-Camp Hill service would be a passenger service over a route which doesn't currently have any. Sorry!

I don't know quite how or why Project Mapping has become favoured by NR or ATOC. Their maps are simply not very good. They appear to want to simplify complicated maps (in the same way that Harry Beck made the Tube legible) but their maps are often confused, wrong and ugly. There are too many angles, inconsistent proportions and an apparent indecision about whether to be geographically correct (which they're not) or graphically simplified (which they're not).

I don't want to comment on errors but I must say that that is one ugly, ugly map

As well as being an incredibly useful and ambitious guide, I actually find it quite nice-looking (except London!). As far as I know this is the only attempt to be comprehensive in a single static document.

Maybe we should assemble a list of errata? If the creator received the corrections on here, this map could be truly awesome. (And it might be interesting to hear the current rationale (if any) for designating a service as 'limited', straight from the horse's mouth).

Blackridge is missing from between Caldercruix and Armadale.

This might be a timing issue as the decision to build Blackridge was taken quite late in the A2B project.

The map I linked to was published in August!

I agree, but would it look bad if one of us dropped them an email of all of the mistakes and inconsistencies?

EMT don't stop at Stallingborough, Healing, Great Coates, Grimsby Docks and New Clee, and don't run very regularly between CLE and GMB
