FNW used a few 158s on Blackpool to London and Rochdale to Man Vic to London services. They also had 3 of the 322s which they used on London services, which served Manchester Airport.

The FNW London services were due to go over to 180 operation but Virgin got competition protection preventing FNW continuing London services that could be classed as competing with them.

I used to catch a FNW to London at Sandbach,Vt as you say used the anti comp to stop FNW using Crewe, the Man Airport service if I recall stopped at Sandbach and then Tamworth to pick up, the trains I used were on loan from Sandstead Express, the fare was £25 return. The killer punch was VT dropping its fares to £10 return either way Man to Euston as a key spoiler

I think the 'Clansman' (Inverness - Euston daytime service under B R) called at Springburn in the mid-1980s.

When WCML services were diverted over the S&C they called at Appleby, Settle, Blackburn, possibly Hellifield.

Also, March, Ely, Bury St. Edmunds (Harwich - Glasgow / Edinburgh service)

There was a Summer Saturday service which started at Rose Grove

I believe that early morning & late night journeys to/from Bournemouth via Reading served Poole simply to assist the train in returning to Bournemouth depot.

They nearly all went to/from Poole before HSTs were introduced, mainly I suspect because it was easier for the loco to run round.

During 1989, Rose Grove was the starting point for an Inter City "Holidaymaker" Saturday service the 06:50 to Paignton and the terminus for the 14:10 from Paignton return journey.

Ah, the old Rose Grove-Paignton. Often worked by a pair of 31s. And usually formed of a Mk 3 DVT set.

If I remember rightly back in the late 80's/very early 90's, Hinckley used to be served by a summer Saturday 'Intercity Holidaymaker' service which ran between Nottingham and Paignton via Leicester and Birmingham and was worked by a HST. I travelled on it direct from Leicester to Taunton and back in July 1989 and I remember it calling at Hinckley. Think it left Nottingham at around 8.20 and the return from Paignton was something like 14.40. Happy Days!

Rotherham Masborough had intercity services to most parts of the UK - SW, SE, Scotland, London.........

Donny, Leeds and Sheffield is about as far as you can get with a tail wind now (maybe the odd York stopper too)

In InterCity days, some of the Birmingham - Reading services were extended to Paddington, I think to give Leamington, Banbury etc more trains to London. However some of the services that originated north of Birmingham were extended as well, so Manchester and even Glasgow ended up with through trains to Paddington. But Shrewsbury never did, at least not during the late 80s / early 90s.

Glasgow had a daily Paddington service up until at least early 2000s with Virgin Cross country.

Lichfield TV definitely does, it has a few VT services during the peaks. According to Wikipedia Nuneaton is served by them during peak times too, Rugeley isn't though.

When I were a lad "The Inter City" was the 2.30pm Chester - Paddington (don't know the return). So you could add (I think) Wrexham General, Ruabon, Gobowen, Wolverhampton LL and Birmingham Snow Hill.

Queen Street- unless you count the Inverness and Aberdeen services? They were never "InterCity" brand though. It had a brief period of being served by HSTs that caused joyous operational problems by overhanging into the tunnel.

Kensington Olympia- formerly a major hub for Motorail operations as part of Intercity.

Also I remember Carstairs was a hive of activity before they electrified into Edinburgh. Trains would divide into portions coming from the south, and combine from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Also Langley Mill, think a Barrow Nottingham service stopped there in the 80's.

Slough does still receive a token Intercity service - the 05:30 from Bristol Temple Meads stops at Slough at 06:58 (I used it on Monday from Windsor & Eton Central. Was even served a tea in the 17 mins to Paddington!). There is also a 05:51 direct to Cheltenham Spa.

Ah - if stations now closed are allowed, can we include Bradford Exchange and Leeds Central?
For a short while, both stations had "Intercity" services to London Kings Cross, and I can remember seeing "Deltics" in both stations.

The "Bradford Executive" was even a complete through train avoiding Leeds, using the Copley Hill spur round the back of the shed.

It always surprises me when the 1710 and 1810 off Euston to Holyhead stop at Nuneaton! They seem well-used to there, too.
