You could argue everything south of the Thames that used to have an Intercity service now lacks one (apart from HS1/ Eurostar/ the XC service from Bournemouth).

That's correct. However, I mentioned Victoria and Gatwick because in that case the service (Gatwick Express) still exists, it's just lost its "Intercity" status and been integrated into the commuter network.

Paddington/Poole to New Street and beyond. Some of the Solihull trains used to stop at Dorridge as well before they were all diverted via Coventry. The 1974-75 GBTT shows all the NW/SE services going this way and stopping at both in the main.

That's mad. I was aware there used to be a service from Paddington, possibly to Shrewsbury..? Wasn't aware this was a so called Intercity service..!

I think this answer alone highlights just how much has changed.

I'd argue very strongly that Soilhull has a genuinely great intercity service to London. Frequent trains, 80-90 minute journey time for a 100 mile run, loco hauled stock a lot of the time. Surely this is the very definition of an intercity service in every way other than the fact that it wasn't on a BR map thirty years ago?

What intercity services used to run to ramsgate out of interest? When did they stop? Where did they run on to?

Cross Country ran out of there on summer Saturdays as recently as ten years ago. I couldnt quote you every stop, but they ran to Manchester via Kensington Olympia, Reading, Oxford, Birmingham (etc)

*edit*

Or did they only run as far as New Street? Either way, they were an extension of the current Birmingham - Reading trains.

These were XC services from Manchester/Liverpool/Birmingham via Kensington Olympia I believe. They terminated at Ramsgate. I think they ran only in the summer months.

They continued into Virgin's franchise and were among those where hired-in "classic traction" including the Deltic was used.

Totally agree in some respects. However, I tend to think of Intercity more of the service it used to have - trains to Portsmouth, Blackpool, Manchester etc. Even though the current service is clearly Intercity, the fact it's my standard route to London just makes me not think about it like that.

Err, Reading is technically south of the Thames...

Whoops! Just spotted you referred to Bournemouth trains (they used to run to Poole you know...)

Didcot's south of the Thames too... ;)

It ran Ramsgate-Edinburgh as 1S87. The loco was changed at Birmingham New Street. I remember travellibg on it behind the Deltic :)

In InterCity days, some of the Birmingham - Reading services were extended to Paddington, I think to give Leamington, Banbury etc more trains to London. However some of the services that originated north of Birmingham were extended as well, so Manchester and even Glasgow ended up with through trains to Paddington. But Shrewsbury never did, at least not during the late 80s / early 90s.

Geordie back from exile.
Cleethorpes, Grimsby Town, Habrough, Barnetby, Market Rasen all had a daily HST service to London.

Mid 80's the up Royal Scot used to start from Ayr so to add to the list I will suggest, Ayr (as noted by Driver 9000 in post #3), Prestwick, Troon, Irvine, Kilwinning, Johnstone and Paisley Gilmour Street.

Parkeston and/or Dovercourt. There was a pre-XC service that went from Birmingham via the WCML and the NLL to Stratford, thence to Parkeston Quay.
I believe that early morning & late night journeys to/from Bournemouth via Reading served Poole simply to assist the train in returning to Bournemouth depot.
What about the old Thames-Clyde Express? That served stations like Dumfries, Kirkconnell, Sanquhar, Thornhill & Kilmarnock. IIRC, it went via Nottingham, rather than Derby.
Years ago, before pre-XC "standardised" on going via Doncaster and/or Leeds, some services went via Pontefract Baghill, but I don't think they stopped there Mon-Fri. (They MAY have done on Sat or Sun)
There was a version of "The Clansman" that went up the WCML to Motherwell, then operated to Perth (or beyond) via Cumbernauld and Coatbridge. Some services certainly stopped at Cumbernauld - I'm moderately sure they stopped at Coatbridge as well.
Someone earlier said that the Inverness service (presumably to/from London) stopped at Polmont. Don't remember this, but the Highland Chieftain and/or its predecessor certainly stopped at Linlithgow.

Let's not forget Shrewsbury and Telford - 6 tpd until May 1992, changing from diesel to electric at Wolverhampton.

The Cambrian Coast Express was a further extension of this service, 1 tpd to/from Aberystwyth until 1990, but with the DVT, first class and buffet car removed.

I was not aware the Cambrian Coast Express was a DVT?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Platform lengths would suggest so, and NWT called there with their Blackpool - Euston services.

...........................................................................................

I was also not aware NWT ran Blackpool to Euston,

Manchester Victoria, only inter city station without a direct service to London, apparently

First North Western ran Euston services for a couple of years from Man Vic.

Sutton Coldfield - It was Birmingham's motorail terminal in the 70s
Marston Green - 1 train per day to/from Poole used to stop here in the late 80s, not quite sure why though as it's only a mile or two from Birmingham International.

Don't the FGW services to Paddington have a similar stopping pattern to the old IC services?
Silly me, how did I not think of that - I was thinking of XC style services.

Now removed.

During 1989, Rose Grove was the starting point for an Inter City "Holidaymaker" Saturday service the 06:50 to Paignton and the terminus for the 14:10 from Paignton return journey.

Although Intercity services still run to Great Yarmouth on summer saturdays, they also served Acle, Lingwood, Reedham, Cantley & Brundall en-route.

I remember the holidaymakers, great fun. They were the only services that used to bring mk3 loco hauled stock to New Street in the late 80s/early 90s.

I think they used to serve Weymouth too.

I was also not aware NWT ran Blackpool to Euston,

First North Western ran Euston services for a couple of years from Man Vic.

FNW used a few 158s on Blackpool to London and Rochdale to Man Vic to London services. They also had 3 of the 322s which they used on London services, which served Manchester Airport.

The FNW London services were due to go over to 180 operation but Virgin got competition protection preventing FNW continuing London services that could be classed as competing with them.
