Plymouth Station Improvments

What is the actual achievement of the improvements that are occuring at Plymouth? They have extended the station concourse towards the car park, incorparted the Cash Machine into the building. But there is no new seating, no toliets which are needed badly. The new bit looks nice and modern but walking into the old bit is like oh! no flowing design very tacky looking. Does anyonw else know what is going on there?

I dont see how it has improved anything!!

One "improvement" they could make is to get rid of the irritating automated announcements whenever anybody enters (and leaves) the stairwells. I really don't need to be told to "take care on the stairs and hold the handrail". I haven't encountered these announcements at any other station.

Somebody fell down them (and presumably complained), arse covering excersise basically.

The Plymouth station improvements haven't finished yet. The extension of the concourse was just the first stage. Toilets will now be installed on the concourse, with the facilities on platforms 4 and 7 improved. The waiting room on 4 will then be expanded with facilities on other platforms improved too.

Thanks, thats cleared up a few things. Where are they putting the toliets do you know? I heard they were thoose 20p toliets. Hopefully they sort the subway out and moderisne the look and they will have a decent station under the circumstances

I have - Glasgow Queen Street Low level. It's not just confined to rail stations though, Glasgow Airport had LCD Sceens playing a loop of someone telling you not to take trollies on the Escalator

North Road (Plymouth's proper name) isn't the most pleasing station to look at, but has always been well presented in general, in the days of real station announcers, in the early 80's i remember the station having one of the clearest and best in the business, spent many an hour watching trains in and out, great memories indeed

I've used Plymouth a fair bit down the eyars, and always though it was a bit of a dump. The subway is damp, narrow and miserable, and the concourse ugly.

I need to make another journey down there soon, and I hope I will be pleased witht he imporvements!

However it used to break up the day when I worked on rail enquiries if someone asked for times from North Road to Truro for example when people asked for times at North Road to give them an 8 hour journey Via Darlington.

I have no idea where the toilets are going in, I can't see a lot of room for them myself.

The new CIS system should be installed very soon as well, replacing those horrible old CRT monitors on the concourse.

Thank god! I hate them screens. Horrible and very outdated, i mean how they lasted this long was incredable lol. I remember the same screens when i was like 6 years old getting the early morning train to Glasgow Central.

I mean the grey bit on the ticketing desks is awful and removing that would make the concourse abit brighter and open.

Yes the totleits where are they going to go? Unless they remove shop space? which i doubt. Maybe where the old small pumpkin coffe shop used to be behind the barriers? There is space there i guess.

Vey true! would not be fair to people to arrive in a nice moderinsed looking station and walk out to concrete jungle

The new toilets together with a new 35 seat concourse lounge will be installed on the left hand side of the new entrance as you walk out of the station behind the existing SPAR shop.

I really want to see how the station is progressing.

There still seems to be no information of the plans anywhere. But time has passed and i assume the CIS has gone in! And that the refurb is nearlly finsihed. I keep trying to find some pictures somewhere but to no avail! I need to try get down there soon!

Dundee also. Must be annoying for the station staff to have to listen to that all day.

There is very little to get excited about. The concourse has been extended to the edge of the canopy, and the thus the ATM on the pillar has been brought inside (on the same pillar), the corner is cut off my a diagonal door. The waiting area has been pushed back into this new space and carpetted. No new toilets (yet) no new CIS.

The new CIS screens FGW are installing look nice, but they come with the worst announcement voice ever, this common young woman who can't string a proper sentence together, absolutely dreadful she is, and I hope they change it again ASAP.

New CIS screens, etc are being installed over the next fortnight. Some of the new hardware is on site ready for installation, including parts of the new concourse departure board.

I probably guess it could just be teething issues, like what most new stuff would have. Even so, I hope they get improved too as I'll be coming home from uni in a few weeks time.

On a similar topic, since I've heard that RENFE's bidding on the franchise, I wonder if we might be hearing their signature tune (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aeeb3ZqirkU&feature=related) on announcements if they win?

Went there yesterday. Work seems to have randomly stopped.

No new toliets
No new departure boards
No improvements bar the extention of the front.

Thoose screens need to go fast, had help old woman fidn her train as she couldnt see what it said, neither could i for part of it. Blurry and faded.

Work has far from stopped... You will notice that on ALL platforms new speakers for the new CIS system have been installed. Training to the staff for the new CIS is taking place over the next few weeks.

The 2nd part of the refurbishment works starts soon, and will be finished by May time. However the new departure screens and CIS system should be installed and working a little before then.

I think that subway needs a lick of paint or a refurb. What does the 2nd phase include? just the things i mentioned above?

2nd phase includes what you mentioned. I think it may include a 'Welcome Lounge' on platform 7/8 but not 100% sure!

how is the subway "narrow" ?
